  1. Our Bro Kilmer Abrego Garcia fled El Salvador. They won’t commit because sending body bags back is bad optics

  2. I mean to be honest what can the US do? He’s a Salvadoran citizen held in Salvadoran prison. We can’t bring him back if they don’t let him go

It would be different if it was a dual citizen but even then that would be difficult. Countries have the right to imprison their own people

  3. Sounded to me like he committed to *not* release him. Hard to say whether they have their own motivation for holding him, or if this was just a performance so that Trump can save face.

  4. I mean the US is probably paying for him to remain. That is the whole point of the deal. Why would he let him out when Donald is paying the bill?

  5. Absolutely abhorrent that they’re both colluding to defy a court order and the Supreme Court. Prior to the press meeting, a conversation clip was overheard where Trump is talking to Bukele about building more prisons for “home grown” criminals next. The video can be seen on Bukele’s Twitter feed under “visita a la Casa Blanca” During Biden’s presidency, he was trying to get in the White House’s good graces and now he’s found his “in” joking about subverting due process and ignoring a court order alongside a sitting US president.

Edit: The timestamp is about from 7:00 – 7:30.

  6. This ought to be clear to everyone, but to be very explicit: this is the President of the United States choosing to defy an order of the Supreme Court. It is farcial for Trump to pretend he can do nothing, as the president of the most powerful country on earth, to facilitate the return of Garcia from the gulag which the US illegally sent him to. We will see if things come to a head in this case or if they will come to a head later. But the Constitutional Crisis has now arrived.

Trump again floated the idea of sending citizens to El Salvador during this press conference. The legal argument the administration is making is that they cannot be compelled to return an individual from El Salvador if they “accidentally” render them to a foreign gulag because of some supposed deference the president gets on foreign policy. There is no distinction in that argument between citizens and non citizens. It should be apparent that unconstitutional imprisonment of citizens is where this train is headed.

  7. This is the president who says he’s such a great negotiator, but he can’t even get concessions from a vendor.

But we know it’s because he doesn’t want to.

  8. Most nazi death camps were not located in Germany. Looks like trump is following that playbook to the letter.
