Library on US-Canadian border embodies growing divide over Trump’s policies • FRANCE 24 English

Straddling the US-Canadian border, the Haskell Library has a unique location: it is situated in both the towns of Stanstead, Quebec and Derby Line, Vermont. Until now, an agreement allowed Canadians to use a stretch of pavement on the American side to access the library. But since a controversial visit by US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem back in January, US Border Protection has put an end to that agreement. As the iconic border town now awaits the fate of its century-old customs posts and famous Canusa Street, Stanstead already embodies the growing divide between Americans and Canadians. FRANCE 24’s François Rihouay, Joanne Profeta and Fraser Jackson report.

  6. This is the most idiotic thing I’ve ever seen. That plastic “woman” is so useless, she wouldn’t even make a good hat rack. She does represent the incompetence and stupidity that is the Trump party. That town is as much of a threat as a knife made out of soggy noodles.

I know is difficult, while your country is under attack, and people are loosing their livelihood, to stay civil, but half of the USA citizens did not vote for that, so as long as you do not know whom you are dealing with, you must remember that half of their country is suffering too, under the MAGA oppression.

Us citizens have lost their backbone over the years after having the threat of their military doing it for them. It's a tough war for Canada, but we are 40 million strong. Most in the US could care less about this trade war. It is encouraging to see the countries across the world buying less and less US products, travelling less and less to the US…..All countries are watching the US vs Canada…..Kind of reminds you of Russia vs Ukraine…….To all people of all nations Canada thanks you for your support…Oh, and every American reply saying "stay home, don't come, who needs you" just adds fuel to our fire…..When your county, state, property taxes, and whatever else tax goes up, because of Canadians not helping you pay them…

    [While visiting this library, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi] Noem reportedly stepped up to the tape and said, with a grin, “U.S.A. No. 1,” and then crossed the line into Canada and said, “The 51st state.”

    “She did it at least three times and was very clear in saying, ‘U.S.A. No. 1,’ and didn’t even say ‘Canada.’ Just, ‘The 51st state’,” said Deborah Bishop, the library’s executive director, who is Canadian, speaking to the Boston Globe.
