  3. “penny/pence” has deep historical roots in Britain. The word penny comes from the Old English penig, and coins called pennies were used way before the decimal system came to the UK in 1971. Back then, there were 12 pence in a shilling and 20 shillings in a pound. It was only with decimalization that the pound was redefined as 100 “new pence”—but they kept the traditional name pence because it was so familiar.
