TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The Tuscaloosa City Council has decided to withdraw a motion to revoke the business license of Skinners LLC Transportation, a local taxi service. The council was initially set to vote on closing the business, which the city claimed was not adhering to regulations.
The city had received multiple complaints alleging that the owner of Skinners Transportation was operating without proper documentation, including vehicle commercial insurance. Howard Davidson from the Tuscaloosa Police Department said, “and in the next one is for inspection of vehicles, that was on September 23rd of 2023 and then the next one was for no valid chauffeurs license and that was for September 23rd of 23.”
Business owner Johnny McDowell appeared before the council in October 2024 to defend his services. McDowell said, “When he pulled me over I didn’t have the insurance on the vehicle at the time, my chauffeur license was expired because I had taken my time thinking I’ll get to it in time. But when he pulled me over for all of that I got all of my information, I got the chauffeur license like he said and also my insurance.”
The meeting was initially tabled for six months with the intent of later voting on revoking the business’s license. Mayor Walt Maddox explained, “At the time the council really wanted to essentially give a second chance.”

On Tuesday night, the council voted to withdraw the motion altogether. Mayor Maddox said, “I think what you saw was they done a really good job of that over the last six months and so the council has decided to withdraw it which is the best outcome for everyone.”
When asked if the issue has been resolved, Maddox said, “It’s been resolved to the satisfaction of our police department and our revenue department so if they feel good about it then we feel good about it.”
Johnny McDowell expressed his satisfaction with the council’s decision, saying he is pleased with the outcome.
