INDIANAPOLIS – The IU Indianapolis men’s basketball program announced an eighth new addition in its recruiting class as Gustav Winther (Copenhagen, Denmark) recently signed to join the Jaguars. The 20-year old Winther, a 6-foot-10 forward, played for the Basketball Club Copenhagen in the Danish BasketLigen this past season and has past experience with Holbaek-Stenhus in Denmark. He’s also played with Denmark’s National Team, having played in the 2022 Euros with the U18 squad.
“We’re really excited about bringing Gustav on board,” head coach Paul Corsaro said. “He’s a really skilled and really gifted big guy. He’s a big body at 6-10, but runs the floor incredibly well and is just a really good athlete. He’s versatile with his ability to shoot from the outside, handle the ball for a big guy and has great court vision and ability to find his teammates.
“Defensively, he brings rim protection and rebounding to our front line. Anytime you bring a kid from overseas, there’s an adjustment period, but we’re confident that Gustav is going to contribute right away at both ends of the floor.”
Winther averaged 12.3 points and 5.7 rebounds per game in 27 games with Copenhagen during the 2024-25 season. He shot better than 57 percent from the field and 72 percent from the free throw line. The year prior, he averaged 9.1 points and 6.5 rebounds per game for Holbaek-Stenhus while shooting 47 percent from the floor. During the 2022-23 season, he averaged 12.3 points and 5.8 rebounds per game as an 18-year old. He helped Denmark to a silver medal finish at the 2022 U18 Euro Championships, averaging 2.6 points and 4.1 rebounds per game during his seven appearances.
Winther becomes the eighth IU Indy men’s basketball addition for next season, joining George Mason-transfer Austin Ball, Eastern Kentucky-transfer Micah Davis, St. Bonaventure-transfer Jaxon Edwards, South Dakota State-transfer Will Whorton and high school signees Maguire Mitchell, Austin Sperry and Gabe Stewart.
