A viral social media post claims that Italy’s AVS (Alleanza Verdi Sinistra) party is asking the Italian government to intervene and stop the United States from executing Luigi Mangione, who is accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare executive Brian Thompson. But there are no media reports or any verified evidence to prove that such a post or request was ever made.
The post shared on X, which has a screenshot showing a Facebook statement by AVS lawmaker Marco Grimaldi, has not been found on any of his official accounts. There are no media reports or statements from AVS confirming what has been written in the screenshot.

While the sceenshot remains a mystery, Mangione’s connection to Italy seems to hold credibility. His last name is well known within Baltimore’s Italian-American community. According to a report by BBC News, the family is known for its wealth, philanthropy, and strong ties to Italy. Giovanna Aquia Blatterman, a longtime resident who has known three generations of Mangiones, told the BBC, “He appeared clever, approachable and handsome.”

While Mangione has Italian roots, there is no official confirmation that he holds dual citizenship.

Mangione has been indicted in federal court on charges of murder, stalking, and using a firearm in a violent crime. He is also facing state charges for the December 4 killing of Thompson.
