Now, visualization contents based on tracking data can be viewed on professional baseball broadcasts.

The Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) said on the 18th that it will test-run visualization contents based on tracking data on KBO League broadcasts from the 18th. “This season, it will be applied only to broadcasts of games held at Jamsil Baseball Stadium and Gwangju-KIA Champions Field in Seoul.”

This content is designed to express game data in abundance on the broadcast screen and to provide immersive realistic content. The main goal is to improve baseball fans’ understanding of the game through high-quality relay content based on tracking data, as well as to diversify relay broadcast content and improve quality.

Trackman-based tracking data will be displayed on the broadcast screen when replaying major pitches, hits, home runs, and strikeout situations. Pitch-related data is provided with pitch type, speed, and revolution (RPM), and detailed indicators such as batting speed, launch angle, and distance are displayed in the case of batting.

In particular, visualization graphics that follow the actual trajectory of pitches and hits are applied to intuitively convey data for each situation, and the flow and results of the game can be understood more vividly. Depending on the situation, visualization graphics from various angles such as infield, outfield, first base and third base will be used, allowing baseball fans to enjoy a more immersive and vivid viewing experience by combining the flow of actual play with real-time data.

Through the pilot project, sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Sports Promotion Foundation, KBO plans to check the possibility of fan-friendly data-based content and continue various attempts to improve the overall quality of broadcasting along with technology advancement in the future.
