A tremor measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale struck Malta late Thursday evening, with its epicentre unusually close to the island, just 16 kilometres off Mellieħa.

The earthquake, recorded by the University of Malta’s Seismic Monitoring & Research Group at precisely 11:57pm, lasted only a few seconds but was felt across the entire archipelago.

According to officials, the quake had a remarkably shallow depth of 5km, though Italy’s Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia reported a significantly deeper measurement of 21km.

A police spokesperson confirmed that no immediate reports of damage or injuries were received by either the police or the Civil Protection Department.

Residents across Malta quickly took to social media to share their experiences, with many islanders reported hearing a distinct rumble lasting up to five seconds.

The earthquake occurred just as hundreds of people had gathered in Mellieħa to begin a charity walk to Floriana in aid of Puttinu Cares.

This tremor follows another seismic event that disturbed many Maltese residents in the early hours of Wednesday, when a magnitude 4.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Catania, Sicily.
