So, this letter came in the post today. Stamped and all. Never received anything like it before.

Clearly some Christian/Church propaganda, with a fairly harmless message. But the effort and time gone into it surprised me. It is hand written (not photocopied) and even has a tippex mark to correct a mistake.

How common is this sort of thing? Do companiess/groups like JW.org just hand write a load of letter and post them to random addresses? In the hope of a response? Can't imagine it's super economical .

(I'm not a church goer or have any links with anything religious btw).

  1. Yes, this is what Jehovah’s Witnesses do now instead of knocking on doors.

  2. Yeah we have one round our way that does this too. Unfortunate waste of a stamp as both myself and my husband are atheists.

  3. Normal for Jehovahs Witnesses I expect. Beyond that, not statistically normal! (by which I mean I’m sure it’s an extreme minority of the UK population writing such letters)

  4. Commenting as a postman. We deliver a lot like this, it’s some religious group “spreading the word of the Lord”. It initially started during Covid, when we were in lockdown so this was the only way to spread it.

  5. Got one of these too. So weird.

It’s like they expect people to go “Huh, never heard about this Jesus fella before! Sounds cool!” or something.

  6. I get one quite frequently, some Christian Church, pretty sure it’s not the Jehovah’s Witnesses though. Don’t think mine are stamped though. Tbh I’m in favour of it, it feels less invasive than someone knocking at your door to proselytise at me.

  7. Jehovah’s Witnesses are required to spend a certain amount of time evangelising. If you don’t want to spend your time going door to door you can use most of the time writing letters.

  8. Just send a letter back saying “He’s not the Messiah, he’s a very naughty boy”

  9. This sort of communication is associated with the Jehovah’s Witnesses specifically. I believe members of the faith are encouraged to proselytise and writing letters to their neighbours advertising the JW is a common way to do so, certainly since the pandemic made knocking on doors undesirable.

  10. In a way doing this is part of them expressing their beliefs, their dedication to the cause as much as any other action they do.

I agree with you OP very curious attention to detail with it being written on lined paper, the Tipp-Ex use. I guess they really want to show this is personalised message hand written hand delivered directly to you. In effect…a message from God.

I can’t decide which I’d prefer to receive less….the letter or the knock on the door!! Neither would be great but I guess you’re right – it’s basically harmless stuff.

  11. Yeah I got one other day inviting me to a service at the local kingdom hall, seems to be what they do now instead of knocking on the door. I wish they wouldn’t at all but I prefer it to a door knock!

  12. Had one a few years back. Didn’t mind. Read it, binned it. Appreciated the effort.

  13. I really don’t understand why Jehovah’s Witnesses would want to spread the Word.

If only 144,000 can get into Heaven, you’d think they’d want to keep it as secret as possible.

  14. Look on the bright side at least it helps support the post office. 😎

  15. Tell them you’ve been “disfellowed”.  Honestly it’s like a magic spell as they will leave you alone for the rest of your life.

  16. Yep. Felt bad first time binning it considering the time it took to write. By the 3rd time however it went straight in the bin.

  17. I am currently staying in the USA for work. I knew that was Jehovah’s witnesses junk mail as soon as I saw it.

Incredibly common with that lot. They want to appear friendly. So they use mass produced photocopied junk mail that looks like real mail.

  18. I would hate that. I would send it back with no stamp. Intrusive creepy cult.

  19. We have an odd little sect here that at one point were hanging little wooden plaques with pictures and verses on in the trees and bushes on my walk. Like the Blair Witch but scary.

  20. the craziest part?? Hand written?? They writing each one by hand? That wrist must be cramping…

  21. I used to do door to door sales and one day had a very eager lady come to the door. I was so thrown off by how easy it was going until we came to the payment she just told me “wait there I’ll return with something off high value”. I had such a rough week so I thought this sale was a nice turn around, until she returned with a pamphlet and tried converting me herself it was like the ultimate uno reverse and I just couldn’t stop laughing at the turn of events 😂

  22. It’s JWs – so Jehovah’s Witnesses – I got one very similar to this in Ireland. That suggests it’s a global initiative. Someone central is preaching/telling members to do this

  23. Yeah I’ve had a few of these. I answer the door as I don’t mind hearing about it. I take the watchtower every now and again too. I just think I’m too polite to ignore.

  24. My mother-in-law is JW (which I like to pronounce as ‘jay dub’). She is lovely and we get on very well, despite being gay and married to her son. She writes these letters and also adds illustrations to them with drawings of flowers and the like. The most harmful thing might be the cost of stamps!

  25. This person got on the watchtower’s bad list; and has been forced to write this letter

  26. Sorry OP you are part of a cult now best of luck with that.

  27. Ex Jehovahs Witness here: if you go on their website, you can also be asked to be put on the Do Not Call list. This will mean they won’t send any more letters or knock at your house.

  28. Got one of these a while back. The hand writing was the neatest I’ve ever seen. Not a mistake or blemish in 3 pages of densely written god bothering.

  29. I was raised and still am one of Jehovah’s Witnesses (not by choice), and yes this is very common for them. I’ve unfortunately had to write quite a few myself.

If people are unable to go out and knock on the doors, like if they are elderly or maybe the weather is really bad then they will just write letters for a few hours instead. Some have a monthly quota of hours they are required to meet. Sadly this also includes kids, who’s parents will make them write letters, probably thinking the recipient will find it sweet, but in reality is a bit disturbing.

During the pandemic I was so happy because I didn’t have to spend my weekend knocking on peoples doors anymore, but then they told us we had to write letters instead… So multiple days a week I would have to spend my evenings writing these letters after school when I’d much rather just be playing video games or something.

In my opinion there is no point in replying or even sending them a critical letter as it only fuels their persecution complex. However you can send a letter asking to be put on their ‘Do no call’ list. This way they won’t send you a letter or knock on your door again.

Happy to answer anyone’s question they have too 🙂

  30. I would say it’s common rather than normal. It’s far from normal.

  31. Normal as in common? Aye.

    Normal as in sane? Nope.

I occasionally get them through the door – always handwritten. They usually handwrite a link to the Jehovah’s Witnesses website at the end (it’s a very short URL).

  32. The fact Jehovahs Witnesses sit and hand write these in bulk is crazy

  33. Because I didn’t want to read it from the letter. Here you go:

I wanted to share some good news with you today. We have the memorial of the death of Jesus on Saturday. So just wanted to share some things that you would be able to know when the balancing of things take place as he died to off-balance sin and death bought on by Adam & Eve.
Jesus proved that he can and will do when he was a man on Earth.

He taught people the truth about God, he fed to hungry crowds was extended to him, he cured the sick, and even raised those who had died (Lazarus, John 11:43) one of many who were raised from the dead.

The thing that we be used to accomplish this is the Kingdom Government in heaven with Jesus and his 144,000 Parlamenteers with him, chosen to him starting with his 12 apostles, now in heaven with full power and backing of the almighty God Jehovah.

Can you imagine yourself living life in good health, truly being able to enjoy life to your full potential with no restrictions of any sort.
The government that rules over us only wants what is best for our well-being. All of this because Jesus died to balance the scales from the sin of Adam.

If you want to know more with no cost or obligation go to JW.ORG to find a local congregation so you can attend for more info.

    May you have peace!

    Best regards,
    Joan (JWS)
