Virginia native Erin Cahill is a frequent visitor into our homes through her now years of work in Hallmark movies and series, including the network’s first holiday-centric series, Holidazed.

Throughout her career, she’s had the opportunity to film in all kinds of different locations. From Dunedin, Florida, in our neck of the woods, for A Taste of Love, to Iceland for her cameo in The Christmas Quest, Cahill has had many exciting adventures while on the job. It’s something she told Southern Living that she doesn’t take for granted. “I think about it all the time. I thank my angels every day.”

But in her latest film for Hallmark Channel, Journey to You, she had the opportunity to film in Spain along the world-renowned Camino de Santiago, and that is something she said was, “one of those life experiences that I’ll never forget.”

In Journey to You, Cahill plays Monica, who finds herself in a place of frustration at the start of the movie. She’s been passed over for promotion at work, so at the suggestion of her mother, she takes a real vacation from work, and plans a trip to Spain to hike the Camino de Santiago.

Her parents made the same trek before she was born and the Camino is known to be a transformative experience. Monica heads out with her essential hiking gear and a journal of devotionals that her late father left her.

Along the way Monica forms bonds with the others in her tour group and even a romantic spark with a single dad. Throughout the movie, we see the group stepping away from their digital devices, cooking dinner together, and making real connections.

Just like in this fictional story, in real life, just under a half a million people journey to Spain to walk the Camino each year. For some it’s a religious pilgrimage and for others it’s more of a health journey. But most will agree that it is a powerful experience. Cahill certainly felt that way.

“It was incredible to be there. And it really did connect me to source in a deeper way, which I think is something that I am constantly looking for. Constantly wanting to be more connected to the Divine. So it was such a gift in that way to be able to go there and be in this deepness,  this wildly historic place. To connect like that is such a life gift.  I cried most days on this movie just out of gratitude.”

And although Spain is an ocean away from Virginia where she grew up or Nashville where she primarily resides with her husband Paul and dog Crumpet, she found some surprising similarities.

“It’s the community of it. It’s the, we’re going to cook together, we’re going to eat together, we’re gonna slow down, we’re gonna dance. It’s community. That is such a similar thing between Spanish culture and the South,” she said.

Cahill added, “It felt so timely for the world, but also for  me personally too. Because I’m just constantly running. It was so beautiful to take the time and slow down on this one.”

Travel to Spain without leaving the couch when Journey to You premieres on Hallmark Channel on Saturday, April 19.
