  1. Grass fires will soon pose one of the primary threats to homes on the edge of towns and cities, firefighters say, after calling on the public to take more responsibility to curb the risk of wildfires.

    A record number of fires on moorland and heathland have devastated an area twice the size of Bristol already this year because of the dry spring and an unusually warm March.

    The National Trust said this was “turning out to be the worst year ever for these human-caused fires across the county”. Conservationists said wildfires were pushing some of the country’s rarest wildlife to the brink of extinction.
