NATO was originally formed to keep Russia out of Western Europe now many in Northern, Central, and Eastern Europe want to join to keep Russia out of their countries, as well. Russia has made itself very unpopular. Its profound unpopularity with its neighbors may very well have the effect of bringing its economy, its military, and even its government to its knees.
