Ukrainian border guards detained a man who was attempting to cross into Moldova hiding in a tanker truck, half-submerged in sunflower seed
oil, State Border Guard Service reported on April 18.
The incident happened during a routine inspection of a cargo truck carrying a tanker filled with sunflower oil. Border officials said they noticed unusual fastenings secured to the hatch of one of the tanker’s compartments. A man was found hanging from these safety belts.
According to the State Border Guard Service, the truck had been headed for exit from Ukraine through the Mamalyga checkpoint on April 17. The vehicle’s driver is a Moldovan citizen.
After investigation, border guards determined that the suspended man is a Ukrainian born in 1982 who lives in Odesa Oblast. He had arranged with the driver to hide inside the tanker—half-submerged in oil—to illegally enter Moldova.
Authorities have filed administrative protocols against the man for attempting to cross the border illegally. The driver was also detained, according to Ukrainian law.
