Canada boosts armed forces training amid rising geopolitical tensions • FRANCE 24 English

Canada’s armed forces are currently engaged in a large-scale training exercise in the country’s Arctic north. Over 40% of Canadian territory lies above the Arctic Circle—an area gaining strategic geopolitical significance as climate change transforms the once-frozen landscape. As tensions rise over the region’s vast natural resources, particularly with rivals like Russia and China, Western militaries are under growing pressure to strengthen their capabilities. Bryan Quinn reports on the high-stakes value of all that snow.

  1. Local men dying fight for the country so that 3rd world takeover it from within by population, story for every western countries these days

  2. This is just opportunistic news. It is not really in reaction of geopolitical tensions. Canadian Army train every year in the northern part of the country. Those exercise are low level platoon or company size.

  3. Actually, with all we've learned from Ukraine, it would not be surprising that we're practicing. Drones have really changed the game. We always like to bring our A game.

  4. The Liberals are giving a pay raise to encourage enlistment. New submarines, new radar systems, ships and icebreakers to protect our sovereign north. New fighter jets to be announced.
    Support Canada vote Liberal

  5. All show no go. They do not have the manpower nor the equipment to do anything more than a little spectacle for the camera.

  6. Trump has made clear his intent to aquire Canada too. You can say it. We're getting ready to defend ourselves against a larger, dumber foe. Slava Canuck.

  7. That's about time to embrace new changes in an unstable future. Gladly to be Canadian and love everyone else, Trump deserves nothing. Sorry for all the american people who are dealing with the D Ts

  8. Canada is undertaking a strategic rebuild of its military to meet modern threats, defend its sovereignty—especially in the Arctic—and uphold international commitments; much like the EU is doing. This renewal includes expanding the Canadian Armed Forces to 180,000 personnel and investing in next-generation equipment across all domains.

Key upgrades include the acquisition of F-35 fighter jets (which may be changed), P-8 maritime patrol aircraft, and modern main battle tanks. Plans are advancing for Arctic-capable warships, new submarines—potentially nuclear-powered—and advanced missile defense systems. The CAF is also integrating drones, electronic warfare, and cyber capabilities to modernize its battlefield effectiveness. Many of these assets have been purchased and are under construction.

Infrastructure is being expanded with new Arctic bases and a revitalized domestic defense industry. Canada is fostering partnerships with European firms and supporting local manufacturing to produce NATO-standard systems, create jobs, and boost exports.

This rebuild reflects a national commitment to security, sovereignty, and economic strength—ensuring Canada can respond to today’s challenges and lead alongside its allies.

  9. I'm 44, already established in my career; and I;m thinking of joining the Army Reserve. I will be too mad to stay at home if Trump tries to take us over.

  10. Canada is updating and investing heavily in its military and defense: New nuclear sub(s), updated Leopard MBTs, an Over the Horizon radar detection system, 3 new Ice Breaker Destroyers for ther far north, and probably 16 F-35s and 68 SAAB Gripen fighter jets, to name a few major enhancements.

  11. We tried being a leader towards peaceful coexistence and did pretty well. A few bad actors spoiled the world. Time to redirect that energy. I'm eager to see what a pissed off Canada accomplishes in the next few years.
