I have always wondered why the logo for the police is…a flame.

  1. Some might say it’s a held up hand. Like when a cop is managing traffic at a crossroads.

But it’s a poorly designed logo indeed.

  2. I think it’s ambiguous on purpose with the flame / hand

  3. Because it symbolises protection and veille, in the same way a fire would protect and permit you to see the dark.

  4. Might be a reference that in medieval cities guards would patrol in the night with torches and they are the predecessors of a police force as we know it…. But that’s reaching a bit.

  5. It’s a dude with a limp dick dancing with a woman that is trying to not touch it and now you can’t unsee it.

  6. Coming from abroad, the plain white vans with the flame logo always reminded me of someone who would install a gas stove or like fix your pipes or something. The orange hi-vis uniforms don’t help.

  7. The Dutch word for ‘pilot light’ being a ‘waakvlam’, or ‘guarding flame’ as in, the police safeguarding the nation

  8. Aside from the correct answers already given, it probably also stems from the logo of Gendarmerie:

In the wake of the Dutroux case, the Belgian police was reformed. Rijkswacht and Gemeentelijke politiediensten merged together. (But also split up again, in Lokale politie and Federale Politie)
So it’s not all too surprising that part of the logo(s) was reused.

  9. Nah, if you look close enough it’s actually a hand you can shove up your ass, because that’s how it feels getting in contact with them..

  10. I saw some policemen hear the central square once with a bigger logo on their uniforms – a dragon in flight over a city skyline, blowing that flame. Don’t know if that’s limited to just 1000 cops, or maybe even a specific unit though.

  11. A nod to the gendarmerie grenade. Don’t forget where these guys come from, because they sure haven’t.

  12. It is the invisible hand that splashes your balls with water when you poop in a wrong way.

It is meant to spread the awareness that whenever you do something wrong, the unseen hand of justice can come to you.

  13. Because the city watch used to walk around carrying lanterns before streetlights.

  14. It’s a vulva surrounded by the circle of an anus hole.
