A Portuguese sandwich. The layers from bottom to top were (I think) toast, cheese, spicy sausage, sliced ham, toast, steak, toast, egg, cheese. Topped with a sauce made from tomato and beer that melted the top layer of cheese, served with fries.
I couldn't clear the plate, I'll come back better prepared next time.
Very tasty, and pretty good value at £13.95 imo. This cafe and the deli 2 doors down (owned by the same people I think) also have some excellent sweet treats.
The Madeira Cafe at Vauxhall. Though worth noting it's listed as Madeira Patisserie on Google maps: https://maps.app.goo.gl/rCzL2gvMMDa5aXQz9

Nice. Lots of other Portuguese spots nearby between Vauxhall and West Norwood also serve this (plus other specials).
Hey OP, did you like it? It doesn’t look drenched in sauce enough for me from this picture, but otherwise how did it taste?
😍😍😍
Give Marinatto in Streatham a go if you get the chance!
It’s a decent cafe! They’re listed as a patisserie because they also own a major bakery nearby in Battersea, one of the largest producers of Pasteis de Nata – the Portuguese custard tarts. They are the people who basically introduced them to the UK, way before they were sold in every supermarket – and they still make very good ones.
This looks similar to the the “special sausage” dish I ordered at a non-English speaking greasy spoon in Porto, which turned out to be two sausages, ham, melted cheese & gravy on top of chips. Glad you enjoyed yours; I did not I’m afraid…
That is just…too much. My heart is burning looking at it.

Had an authentic one of these in Porto and it was horrible. Love Portugal but the food is awful, no vegetables in sight
Stick me in saus, do you deliver to south wales?
This place is awesome
I am pretty sure that it is a very tasty meal… it looks a bit too heavy.
Sorry, francesinhas are dogshit. Random basic sandwich meat thrown together, basic white bread, basic cheese, baked bean sauce, cheap generic fries. It’s like Portugal’s national dish. Like if our national dish that we advertised to the world was frozen fish fingers cooked in the oven with mushy peas and ketchup.
C-, must do better.
Crazy vauxhall, they always have good bites
My mouth started watering immediately.
That looks like a fairly mediocre francesinha, should be stuffed with even more meat and swimming in gravy.
Try [O Cantinho de Portugal ](https://g.co/kgs/jengc7W)down the road in Stockwell, their francesinha is £17 but it’s worth the extra £ – most similar I’ve found to one in Porto.
The heart attack on a plate! ❤️💔😊🤩
6 pounds for a potato and some butter
Games gone
Wow, I’ve dreamed of that sandwich for years, but never managed to go to Porto! Might be worth the way shorter trip to Vauxhall…! hahaha
Best francesinha I’ve tried in London is from Velho Portugal
The worst national dish. Must be!
had this in Portugal and it was … a lot. Never occurred to me you could probably get one here too, thanks! It looks proper.
Is it alive??
As a (Portuguese) northerner, I haven’t had a single good francesinha in London, and believe me, I’ve tried.
I watched my friend eat one of these when we were in Porto. It just doesn’t look good. I hate imbalanced food. If they removed 80% of the meat it might be ok.
Nice, I really miss all the Portuguese places in Vauxhall. I’ve only very tried the Francesinha from Tasca Cafe in Horsham, really enjoyed it, but very much a food coma inducing dish.
