Hundreds gathered at Schenley Park Saturday afternoon to spread awareness about climate change and the impacts the current presidential administration has had on environmental endeavors. Sydney Wilson, organizer of the event, told Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 the rally was held in an effort to educate people on the dangers the environment is facing and how people can help make the world and the area they live in a better place. “We want to spread awareness about climate change, about how the current presidential administration, and those associated with it, are affecting our climate now by the actions they take,” Wilson said. “We also want to build a sense of community and encourage those to come out and meet with people passionate about the same things.” Wilson said speakers from Stand Up Science and other environmental groups spoke at the rally. Multiple activities were also held to educate people of all ages about the harmful impacts on the environment and how they could affect Pittsburgh. “The event is all about showing what it means to have a future with clean water and air,” Wilson said. “We want to teach people ways on how to be proactive and take care of the environment they’re in.” 5050.1 Pittsburgh, who organized the event, is an organization that strives to conduct “50 protests in 50 states in 1 day,” saying demonstrations are “a decentralized rapid response to the anti-democratic and illegal actions of the Trump administration and its plutocratic allies,” according to its official website. Organizers did say, however, that Saturday’s demonstration was not deemed a protest. The event comes just days before Earth Day on April 22.
