Any DIY-knowledgable people in the sub? What is this? I must’ve elbowed the wall in my sleep. How can I fix it?

  1. Lol. It’s just the stud to hold up the plasterboard. They cover over with filler. Over time the temperature change in the house expands and contracts the filler and sometimes falls off.

  2. You’ll need to do a bit more than simply fill if you want to make sure it doesn’t happen again. The mail is probably a bit loose in the stud behind and as such can’t hold the plasterboard firm against the stud. Basically means the nail is sticking out further than it should and a bang anywhere near it has caused the nail to pop out through the plaster board. Get a dry wall screw and screw the plasterboard back into the stud a couple of inches above or below the exposed screw. Make sure it’s secure and the screw head sinks into the plasterboard. Then tap the nail back in with a hammer. Now you can fill, sand and paint and it won’t happen again.

  3. Moving house at the moment and I have alot of art pieces, had to fill 50 holes over the last week.

    Filler, sand, paint.

Paint looks like a magnolia, you can get testers and that will be more than enough to cover it.

  4. It’s the head of a ‘Slab Nail’, an older way to fix the plasterboard to the timber frame. Cover it in ‘Polyfila’ which you can buy it in ready-mix tubs or tubes, in the DIY section of most supermarkets, shops like Deals, Mr.Price, some Euro stores and all Builders Providers. Just fill in the hole, smooth it over. Let it dry for a few hours. Use sandpaper to smooth it over, if needed. Paint

  5. Just buy a small tube of polyfilla at you r local hardware. Ask for mesh tape too. You can fix this no problem.

  6. Go down to screwfix and get some ready mixed filler. Its about a 5er. Fill the hole out past level with the wall then sand it back until its level.

The landlord might get thick if he/she sees it so best to cover it up yourself i’d say.

  7. Fill it with something from woodies, polyfilla I think is the name.

Chip off another bit of paint and bring it in for comparison

  8. I’d tell the landlord and have him fix it. It’s a normal occurrence and there are no other signs that you did anything to cause the damage. That’s the owners job.

  9. If you fill it, have a look around to see if there’s any leftover paint. If you find some he’ll never know.

  10. Get yourself a good painters tool (5in1 or 6in1) – a tenner will get you a decent one that will last you a lifetime. (hardware store of choice).
Small tub of premixed filler. (hardware store of choice).
Sanding block or misc sheets of sandpaper (hardware store or euro store).
Small paint roller + tray (local euro store) (with a nap roll to give some texture, a foam roll will do the job but it will apply very smooth paint).
Small tin of touch up paint.
Using your painters tool scrape around the circumference of the hole to get rid of any loose paint chips/drywall, give it a light sand afterwards. Using the painters tool put a blob of filler into the hole. Then scrape across the hole applying a decent force few times, the goal is to remove the excess filler and try and get the filler as level as possible with the surface of the wall, less is more IMO (this will save you time on sanding and gives).

Let it dry and give it a light sand. Don’t go at it with too coarse a sandpaper, this will only leave scrape marks, you want something in the 200-300 grit range. (The higher the number the finer the grit.)If the hole is below the level of the wall at this stage, just add a little more filler and repeat the steps until you get the finish you want.

Put some replacement paint into your roller tray and roll the roller in it until there’s good coverage on the roll. Apply first coat of paint over your new surface. Put your roller & tray into a plastic bag and tie up the ends, this will stop your roller & paint from drying out. When the first coat is dry you can open up the bag and apply the second coat.
It’s not a hard job, just has a few steps – take your time and you’ll be fine.

  11. Why would you fix it? It’s just wear and tear .

I wouldn’t be spending my own money filling or repainting that.

  12. Usually happens if it’s on wall over the stairs. Vibrations though the wall from the stairs can cause the plaster from the stud to fall off. Go to hardware shop, show them this pick and they’ll give you what you need. Just some filler.

  13. These are all over my house, just do what the arsehole that live here before me did, paint over them with almost the same white as the wall.

  14. Toothpaste. I fixed a bunch of holes with toothpaste and nobody in my family noticed. Unless your partners a freak who goes around smelling walls
