Dumb question from a newbie immigrant here: what do you call these tilted windows? The closest I've found is "skylight", but those are usually higher up on the ceiling.
Also, how do you guys block these out completely for the night? I'm a sensitive sleeper and deploy full-length blackout curtains when I sleep. Are there any simple solutions or will I have to avoid these windows in my bedroom?
Thanks!

They’re called Dachfenster and if they are made by Velux (99% chance they are), that means they’re a standard size you can find out by googling the model number and buy a Verdunklungsrollo for them, either directly from Velux or a third company.
Like you said. Use blackout curtains. Set them up with a rod, hooks, magnets. Your choice
Dachfenster Rollläden

Would be the best solution but not the cheapest.
Maybe google “Dachfenster Rollo”. Something like this might be already installed/included in the window (does not look like it in the Foto). There are also various versions that can be installed after the fact.
Dachfenster. You can buy a ‘rollo’ and install it. It might be a Velux window. The should be a sticker inside the window if you open it with the size/model. With that you can buy a rollo on Amazon.
Best ask your landlord to buy it, it’s not that expensive.
Once the summer kicks in, you’ll anyway not sleep well under the roof…..
Doppelkorn
we added two curtain rods – one above the window and one underneath, added some blackout curtains and it works! 🙂 easiest and cheapest way imo
cheap solution: some layers of Rettungsdecke / space blanket … I carry them always with me when I travel, because cheap hotels nearly never have the possibility to really darken the rooms
Buy a blindfold.
I just bought 2 each kits from Velux, had to order them in the home improvement store using the data plate or label that is found on the top when you open the window. Take a picture if it for when you go order it. Mein were 1 Meter Windows, and the install took 5 minutes, was super easy. They were called “pick and click” kits and all you need is a Phillips head screwdriver. Cost me 126 euro from Globus BauMarkt ( each) but worth it, 100 percent dark.
Very important:
Don’t just go for “Verdunklungsrollo” (blackout), also go for Thermo! These windows make a room heat up tremendously, even if they’re faced away from the sun.
We have the same kind of window and a Rollo from Roto and it’s pretty good, although I think we only have Thermo, not blackout because it’s not a bedroom. However, I’m always amazed at a) the difference in temperature if we forget to close it and b) the tiny heatwave that emerges when you open them in the summer even if that window literally never gets direct sunlight.
Do not underestimate heat, especially if you’re a light sleeper. I can’t close one eye above 25c and those rooms under the roof can easily go up to 30 depending on which direction they face
I have one of those above my bed. My sleep schedule has simply changed 😂 but thanks for your post, I found a few nice ideas from early risers.
to add if you are renting check first if you are allowed to drill or not as some VELUX require it. I bought the suction cup kind and the clip kind (gap is way too small In skylights) and neither worked for me so I’m going back to my landlord to ask because even just the sheet I had up on mine dropped my room temp by 5C
I lived in a roof apartment for 2 years. Had to leave because of the insane heat. Regularly getting up to 37° in the apartment. I highly recommend 2 sets of blinds – one inside the window blackout and the kind that fit on the outside for heat protection that you leave down all summer. Look on the Velux website. I have a bunch still from the apartment you can have if the window codes match.
If it’s a velux window which you can find out by opening the handle and looking along the window moulding, they make many different options. They make blinds, hurricane shutters, mosquito nets and a couple other options. If you’re just renting, look into the Verdunklungsrollo. I’m pretty sure they aren’t permanent…
