Fuck me, that comment section is beyond toxic. It boils my piss that people are that fucking self- centred in this country
Was she not invited to the PMs bash with wine and champagne to celebrate not having to be treated like poor serf class? Sure thought she’d be.
This is printed just like they think the UK govt would give a good god damn. Odd.

If you are this hard up, please get in touch. I’ll try to share what little I have with you.
Together, we’ll get through this and if not, we can at least be in it together.
Why can’t we ensure that single parents are supported in this country? I weep when I read headlines like this.
It’d be nice to say this ladies situation is both shocking and rare in the UK but I can’t. Anyone on benefits are only one sanction away from visiting their local food bank. Anyone in part time work or doing a low paid job probably won’t be able to save a penny of what they earn because all their money goes on sky high rent and bills. So reality is single parents etc aren’t all that far from joining the food bank line as well.
I believe the UN visited the UK a few years ago to investigate the governments treatment of disabled people and to learn how austerity and cuts to welfare effected every day folk. I believe the UN concluded their investigation by saying there’s a human catastrophe on the cards.
Unfortunately it doesn’t look as if the UN were far off the mark with their observations and comments as poverty is now everywhere and spreading. Poverty even got a mention on a recent episode of The Last Leg when Adam Hills said food bank staff were reporting that desperately hungry people are turning down bags of potatoes because they can’t afford to boil them.
What really pisses me off this that this wont save her much as the “energy ass hats” have raised the standing charges (daily charge on top of your energy usage) as well to cover their losses for selling contracts that they couldn’t charge more for, so if you try to use less energy to save money, it will still cost you more than it did.
One of the richest countries on the world ladies and gentlemen.
I waited 40 mins to get through to EDF to set up a payment plan to tackle my arrears caused by a botched handover from a failed company and they wanted £170 a month plus £130 for the new bill . I earn £980 a month, rent is £430. So that’s £730. Council tax is £70. So I have £45 a week for water, food, mobile phone, car tax, petrol , home and car insurance, clothes, etc. I couldn’t get up for work this morning as it’s hard to motivate yourself when everything you earn goes to someone else.
I wonder if the counsellor is up for re election in May? his name is repeated again and again.

The comments are exactly why their grandchildren don’t come visit them anymore and I love reminding boomers that they hate them.
That headline is horseshit.
Energy costs are bad, but she was doing it because she didn’t have anything else to cook with.
I don’t get it, what does a candle wax melter do for your energy costs?
It doesn’t make any sense.
Out of curiosity how cost efficient even is this? Like the cost of those candles compared to the same amount of energy needed in gas.
I was homeless for 7 years. So many of you are fucked by the by. That world will eat most of you alive. I had my legs set on fire twice between the ages 16- 17 and thats the surface.
> Cllr Woodhouse said he has now supplied the family with a microwave, a slow cooker and a company has now offered a cooker to the family
Well obviously I don’t know the full details of her situation but how will she pay for the electricity to run them if she thought candles are her best idea?
Please educate me – I’ve been in fuel poverty before but lucky enough I’m not now.
The point of the article is to stir up resent against the current government but let’s be honest, you’d need to be pretty thick and/or have some mental health problems to think that this is a good idea. It’s clearly a fringe issue.
If they wanted to stir up anger then all they need to do is point out the average energy bill in 6 months time for the average consumer.
This comments section is full of some awful ghouls
As someone who lives similar to this, it’s smart: I use a lot of boiled water to prep meals,
Candles are expensive. Seems like a bad way to save money.
Why is 90% of this sub mirror, Guardian or Indy articles?
By the way, if you live in Buckinghamshire County, and are struggling to pay your fuel costs there may be help through Helping Hands team. Go to the Council website and search Helping Hands.
These energy prices are not likely to abate any time soon.

A problem with the upcoming price rises is even if you turn everything off the daily charges are also going up, so you’ll be paying more either way.
The cost of living go’s up, the standard of living go’s down.
It’s stuff like this which makes me glad I emigrated. The country is not in a good place
“Boris is doing his best” “He’s had A hard few years” “He deserves the pay rise he’s getting”
Sad and unfortunate thing is a lot of people who are in this situation voted for him and probably will continue to vote for him and his government because you know “immigrants bad”.
I have genuine sympathy for these people and I do hope they realise who is ACTUALLY responsible for their current situation.
ONE specific example making us assume everyone’s suffering the same.
Typical BS from the news stirring hatred and panic.
