Gee I wonder why the Irish would be happy to see N.I. cut off from the rest of UK as much as possible? I can’t possibly imagine what the motivation would be there.

There is obviously issues regarding the NIP, whether these were known at the time or are an escalation of the NIP due to political pressures is neither here nor there.
A16 needs to be used and then the issues with the NIP temporally fixed while negotiations can continue without deadlines and threats.
It’s in everyone’s interests to have a prosperous and safe NI, one where goods are bought and sold freely without friction between NI and GB, but also Ireland and NI.
