What do people expect? Should they come with bicycles? Not really practical.
It’s held right after a G20 meeting and at one extremity of the European continent, not to mention that it’s in Glasgow of all places. All of this doesn’t help one bit in leaving greener travelling alternatives.
These meetings should happen online really.
Can I play devils advocate?
Changing these dinosaurs opinions on the climate is the number one goal of COP26. Them and their security’s footprint pales into insignificance given the amount of influence they wield.
Now imagine having over 100 leaders land in London and taking the LNER train service to Edinburgh, then Scotrail to Glasgow. We even struggled to secure Greta.
If keeping these lot safe means flying, then I’m ok with that. Just as long as they keep being productive with their time here. Bolsonaro agreeing to end deforestation is a good example of the sort of miracles that are possible this coming fortnight.
So.
Let’s make a hypothetical. Your options are to hold an emergency global climate change meeting, attempt to reach a global consensus and save our planet and our descendants futures from an apocalyptic civilisation ending disaster. But to do so requires they all meet up in a single place.
Do you criticise and undo all this, drown out the reporting on this and the potential to foster within the worlds populations the sense of urgency needed by making clickbait gotcha articles about a few planes being used. Or, do you shut the fuck up with your smug, shit eating grin, and superior moral attitude towards these world leaders who are hardly going to get a taxi across the planet, or catch a bus?
Difficult choice. At least if this meeting never took place, our descendants will feel happy that atleast a few hundred less plane journeys took place in 2021, this will be a great comfort to them as they roast like potatoes and fight a in the global war over the last pool of fresh water left.
Given the scope of what we are all facing and the necessity of global cooperation in the solution, is 400 jets for world leaders really the issue we want to be focusing on?
