Looked into the economics of this a few years back. It’s an interesting concept but the biggest limiting factor in many places is the proximity to distribution assets.
Feels combustible…. compressed air in an oil well.
I do pumps, turbines, and compressors and have worked on many feed studies using these wells for energy storage. It all sounds neat until you get into the details and ultimately reach the conclusion that the round trip storage efficiency is terrible, think really bad efficiency. Usually the people doing the studies will get some grant money, work on it until the money is gone, and then disappear.
