How could Canada deter an invasion? Nukes and mandatory military service

1. > Canadians and Europeans understand the American partnership is over.

   I hope it’s not over permanently. NATO still exists. I think a lot of people in both America and Europe are hoping that in four years things will get better. I doubt they can go completely back to the kind of trust that once existed, but NATO has been the cornerstone of peace, especially in Europe and America, for decades. A return to world wars isn’t in anyone’s interest. 

2. The suggestion that Canada go nuclear is not a realistic one. A nuclear deterrent relies on being able to make a credible threat to use the nuclear weapons when an invasion occurs. How many nuclear weapons does Canada hope to build? America is a big country. A couple nukes aren’t going to do enough to stop an invasion that is underway. And the threat of a few million Americans being killed won’t deter the kind of madman who would order an invasion of Canada. 

3. If Trump actually tried to invade Canada, I promise that’d spark a civil war in the U.S. Even the most die-hard MAGA I know think what’s happening with Canada is stupid.

   Now, with that in mind, assuming Carney wins the election, I sincerely wish him luck with diverting Canada’s trade assets. A lot of why I left Canada is exactly because the country is too damn expensive. (I went back to visit family in Ontario recently and holy shit the price of everything astonished me compared to America.) Diverting Canadian trade to the EU would only make that significantly worse, not even mentioning how this feat would take years upon years to undertake.

   I’m also not convinced any of this shit will survive Trump’s term. In part because the U.S. absolutely has had leaders do these things before. The U.S. government historically has: banned speech against it, illegally spied on citizens, the whole Mccarthyism shit, illegal experimintation from the CIA, and probably more. America can absolutely survive Trump and recover because it’s all happened before. The only difference is Trump announces it out loud.

4. Right now this is getting brigade ratio’d. 64%?

   God damn!

   Canada does need a Swiss-style militia.

   Most cities have a garrison and most people live near one. Get everyone basic training and have weapons for them. Shit goes down? Canadians show up and get their gear.

   Rural areas? Like the Swiss: issue them kit and they keep it locked up at home.

   Look – Trump says Canada isn’t pulling their weight. Fine. ~30m combat troops in 24 months? Just defeated that argument.

5. The thing about Canada, is that it really can’t be invaded. It’s the longest land border on earth, with almost no cover from any fire. And it is as cold as Russia.

    As an American, this just isn’t going to be allowed to happen. Mexico maybe, Americans are pretty racist, but not Canada. 

6. Nah, it is way easier than that, create a childern sex ring, capture politician and powerful individual in the act, and blackmail them. For the ones who aren’t interested , just give them a couple hundred thousand of dollars and they are yours, this strategy worked great for Israel, it is way cheaper than making and maintaining a large stock pile of nukes.
