  1. Damn that Vance meeting might have literally killed the Pope

  2. Just read about him meeting Vance yesterday and now this.

    RIP Pope Francis.

  3. Day after Easter, probably holding on for that. Not a Christian, not all that interested in religion, but RIP, I hope he passed peacefully.

  4. He seemed relatively progressive for such an old institution, RIP

  5. Battled through the worst to celebrate Easter with people in Italy and verbally spanking JD Vance before going out. What a legend.

  6. Wasn’t he at the Easter service yesterday? Pretty crazy.

  7. I’m not a Christian but he seemed like a decent man.  RIP

  8. I’m glad he got to make it through Easter – he was quite a progressive man trying to (slowly) usher in a more progressive era for the church. Will be very interesting to see what direction they decide to go in next

  9. Politics aside, hopefully the next elected pope can continue the progressive work that he has done during his reign.

  10. He knew the worst is coming and probably even God can’t stop it. If there is a God, I hope Pope tells him everything wrong with the world today. We need a big reset cause we are heading back into the stone age by the look of it.

  11. I am not Christian, but still feel sad. A good man passed away.

  12. He saw that Ferrari has no chance at the championship this year

  13. He was a good Pope, the man did his best to remove old thoughts and move with the world. He changed the chair he sits on from some grandiose throne to a simple stool, he knew what his role was and I hope he is resting in peace.

  14. Where’s the ‘JD Vance comment counter’ when you need it

  15. All things considered he was an above average pope. Made some good choices made some bad. No huge scandals. I hope he rests well

  16. I don’t wish to anyone to die at this troubled times without a clear hope for the future, I am atheist but I still consider him a good person

  17. At least he lived long enough to finish watching WrestleMania.

  18. > “But he emerged on Easter Sunday — a day before his death — to bless thousands of people in St. Peter’s Square and treat them to a surprise popemobile romp through the piazza, drawing wild cheers and applause.”

    That’s actually pretty crazy

    RIP

  19. I know he was often criticised as a “PR Pope” brought in just to steady the ship after so many scandals rocked the Catholic church but, even as a non-Christian, I’d always been inspired by Francis consistently standing up for marginalised peoples and trying to gently recontextualise Christian values to fit the 21st century.

With the global pivot towards the far right and what feels like even chaos on the horizon, I hope his replacement continues with his message of love and dignity for all because it’s needed now more than ever. RIP Francis.

  20. 2025: Easter is celebrated as the day the Pope dies.

    Continuing the year’s f’d up vibe…

  21. You don’t have to be a believer to acknowledge that Pope Francis was an exceptional individual who tried to embody the principles his church espouses and bring more stability to the world. He will be missed, and needed.

On a different note, it’s the comments to news like this that continually put into perspective how US-centric Reddit is.

JD Vance jokes are what you people upvote the most, really? Guess that’s to be expected when many Americans don’t grasp the reverberations news like this will have throughout the (western) world.

On a side note, it’s interesting how Catholicism is the largest Christian denomination in the US, but the average American doesn’t know much about and seems to mostly be weirded out by it. I find some Americans’ claims that Catholicism isn’t Christianity at all both confusing and amusing o_0.
