  1. RIP. He had the right rhetoric about social issues, but probably didn’t have the power to reform the church. Worse, I hope the next pope won’t be even worse, I’m sure they also have their “MAGA” wing.

  2. Its the way of life, rest in peace.

Hopefully his last memory was not Vance.

  3. As if we needed more proof that MAGA is a disease. Vance meets him and a day or two later the man dies.

  4. Man died of second hand embarrassment after the Vance visit…

  5. Yesterday, he meets JD Vance, today he is dead… coincidence? I think not.

  6. JD Vance was too much for him to handle—the last straw.

  7. I’m not RC but RIP he always came across as a decent man

  8. Recuiescat in papem

Judging by the world becoming more right wing  his succesor is probably Frollo or something

  9. RIP. Time for another conclave, lucky that movie taught everyone what it is, I guess.

  10. I am not a devote Catholic, but this man had my respect. May he rest in peace.

  11. Thank you Franciskus for being a liberal beacon in the world and church. RIP.

  12. Made it to Easter.

Reminds me of those people who die right after their kid’s marriage or firstborn etc. Might’ve just had the strength to reach that event and that was all.

I think we can be better than making Vance jokes.

  13. Get ready for the global far right to bribe their way to the Conclave to elect a hateful conservative as the next Pope now.

  14. RIP. I liked him, and as a pagan that’s really saying something.

  15. Easter Monday, Rome’s birthday, All the churches’ bells are ringing in the city.

I am no catholic but we lose a good man, a kind guide for more than a billion people that pushed the church to become more accepting even if just a little bit

I remember as a teen running to the square when he was elected to see the magical white smoke

He greeted us with a simple “Buonasera” and now it’s our turn to say arrivederci

  16. Why do I need to read dozens of comments about Vance? He’s not even European. He’s from an enemy state literally.

Let’s celebrate the legacy and memory of Pope Francis. Let’s celebrate Rome.

  17. The amount of childish callousness in these comments is an accurate reflection of Reddit and society as a whole. It makes me wonder however whether it isn’t just feigned immaturity masking feelings of anxiety in the face of a relatively wholesome (albeit imperfect) person passing in the midst of so many downright disgusting world “leaders”.

Everyone likes to laugh about popes dying but I think it’s a collective coping mechanism. Anyways, as far as popes go, he was actually a glimpse at the model for what the position actually could and should be: a focus of hope, peace, and universal love. requiescat in pace

  18. He somehow must have saved up all of his last energy to do one last easter.

  19. I am an atheist Irishman with some deep resentment towards the Catholic Church. Francis was the first pope I have respected and admired since John XXIII. He was a decent man and was not afraid to stand up to tyrants. His instincts were Liberal, evidenced by the contempt displayed towards him by Vatican reactionaries.

  20. Looks like he had the courage of the “white flag” before Ukraine.

  21. He wanted to live to deliver his last urbi et orbi on Easter, he had a great and strong will. May he rest in peace with God

  22. Sad news. He did a lot of good deeds for people in need.

But it‘s also sad that he never directly condemned Russia for their brutality.

  23. I hate how instead of some serious discussion comments we get stupid jokes. I am reading The Times article on him, I am in a coffee and I am close to crying. Not because I am religios. I am not. But the good Pope was one of the institutions I remeber growing old. It is just like seeing Obama age and be an old man. It is trully extra ordinary, what Pope Francis was in his life. No- one can now beat his extra ordinary time. I am so tired world. When do we get some good news? I cant take it anymore.

Some of the quotes from Francis

Asked about gay Catholics, he famously said: “Who am I to judge?”

His focus on mercy over doctrine, his restrictions on the traditional Latin mass, and his green light for remarried divorcees to attend mass were opposed by traditional Catholics who accused him of betraying Church teaching.

I can tell you something else. I have had a lot of catolics tell me in my country that I want to kill or wish ill to Pope Francis, and that he is not a real pope or all kinds of evil things. They did it because he was supporting of gey people, or his other liberal stances. But I could always think of it as evil, that is in the corner and that the good world is the mainstream. The good wins right?

  24. Pope Francis worked as a bouncer when he was in college in Argentina. I’m not kidding, look it up. What’s funny is that the first Pope, St. Peter, is at the gates of heaven, he’s the guy that let’s you in. So the first Pope is also a bouncer.

  25. He did his job until the very last moment, respect for that.

  26. People in here really seem to hate the guy, but imo he’s not that bad at all.

He’s by far the most liberal pope there’s ever been. He’s made quotes such as “God is to be encountered in the world of today” and has even made some comments implying he supports the possibility of same sex marriage in the Catholic Church. He was described by a political commentator as being ‘liberal and fundamentally anti-Conservative’.

As far as I can find, he’s never been involved in any political or religious scandals, and seems to have actively tried to root out corruption and abuse in the church.

As far as popes and the Catholic Church have been historically, I’d say he’s alright. His hands are tied to do much more than he has done, but seems like he’s done everything within his power to make things better. Criticising him heavily and just writing him off as ‘just as bad as the rest’ isn’t really useful and will just make it seem pointless for other people to try and improve things in the future.

  27. Rest in Peace Pope Francis. He was a great and compassionate leader of the Chatolic church I thought. And to be called home to his heavenly father on Easter Monday too
