I'm an international student studying here in Finland, and while walking around, I came across this odd place — it looks like a tunnel or underground garage with a big metal door and a triangle symbol above it. It's located near a residential area and seems kind of hidden away.

Does anyone know what this is used for? Some kind of shelter or utility access? Just curious because it looked interesting and a bit mysterious in the snowy setting

  1. Bomb shelter

Probably have dual use in peace time (storage, practice rooms, sports ..)

  2. “Walking in Finland”, you know Finland is huuuge? Can you narrow it down a little?

  3. bomb shelter, in peacetime many have secondary uses as gyms etc.

  4. Those places can be huge – and I have seen a glimpse of the vast underground shelter and tunnel system under the centre of Helsinki back in the 90’s. What you have had in these news videos and clips is just a small part of a really massive complex.

  5. >shelter or utility access

Both, most likely. Finland has a stable bedrock and very thin soil. Everything is expensive to excavate, but practically eternal once built. That’s part of the reason why big cities are built in several levels. Underground facilities often house practical instruments for residential areas, like ventilation, data cables, water pipelines etc., conveniently out of the way. At the same time they work as a shelter in emergencies.

  6. In a city i used to live, there was a gym and a shooting range in one of those

  7. Helsinki must be full of mysteries for you as so common are underground spaces and ramps like this in this city.

  8. Google: Universal Forssa Operation. Use google translate if you need 🙂

  9. Find the right door, and you get karting track. Not this one.

  10. Bomb shelter 🙂 with some gyms etc probably (i remeber going to play on these places as a kid xd)

  11. Nothing to see here…just keep on moving folks, clear the area

  12. Judging from the graffiti on the wall, this is Otso’s turf.

I’m surprised you managed to get away. Congrats.

Edit: I forgot to mention that rumor has it, Otso has an Olympic sized pool filled with lingonberry jello in that underground health spa.

  13. Bomb shelter (icon on top) but in peace time its most likely storage, maintenance area etc for the city or county etc. So city workers can use it for different kinds pf projects in the area. Some are rented out for companies and the like also. These tunnels can go for kilometers and join up to another tunnels so its impossible to say straight up what is down there. Depends a lot where that is.

  14. It’s where the military is housing the cutting-edge Skynet command and control system. Don’t tell Vladimir!

  15. I once went in to that kind of place when the door was open for some maintance. It was close to Pasila, and it was freaking huge! I ended up bringing my moped there and we rode all the way to malmi. We explored it for weeks before it got closed again, I even had a little birthday party there.

  16. *Allegedly* there’s a tunnel system with bunkers that make Metro 2033 seem archaic by comparison. Us regular citizens can only visit a few places that are being used as ballgame courts and whatnot, but there’s a common narrative of a full parallel Helsinki existing deeper below ground. We can’t know for sure…

Outside of Helsinki, there’s bomb shelters for up to 3/4 of the population at best, or 1/4 at worst. And this number isn’t accounting for longer-term bunkers.

It’s no secret that Finland has been the most prepared for a nuclear apocalypse ever since the Cold War; in fact, many global news outlets love to write about our prepping efforts. They’re usually allowed to film one of two structures; the water reservoir beneath downtown Helsinki, or the bunkers beneath Hakaniemen Tori, of which the top 4-5 floors are open for recreational uses.
