Took French in college and isn’t the easiest nor most utilized language. Would love to learn Portuguese.
Macron about to tariff Algeria 5000x procent if he survives his heart attack
>The ministry’s move was outlined in a directive at the beginning of April, instructing all public universities to begin transitioning first-year medical and scientific courses entirely to English, starting from the next academic year (September 2025).
Actually a fairly big deal.
Buying the dip?
Changing to english right at the beginning of the end of US hegemony seems like a choice
Does this mean there will finally be an end to the reverse colonialism of Algerians of France that has been happening ever since Algerian independence?
I was told everyone should be speaking Mandarin.
As a frenchman, that’s a great news.
French is still widely used. the shift will not be feeled for decades probably but still a pretty big deal…
How’s the average Algerian students’ english?
In my point of view as a french, whether the solution is politic or not, the solution is pragmatic. The algerians will gain more opportunities, so I can’t really criticize a such decision.
Also, there is this tendancy from the french people that the algerians owe the french people when France has commit atrocities in the country. Like, the algerians should feel thankful or something.
Do arab countries just not use arabic in universities?
Actually this is fascinating! What variation or dialect of English are they going to adopt? It’s going to be based on Commonwealth English, or American English? Or is there an already well-established dialect that they plan to use instead? How does it contrast with the English that’s spoken there locally already?
I’m surprised they didn’t pick Russian 🙂 but it’s probably good for young Algerians.
Make Algeria an English problem
In Morocco (and I believe this is true in Algeria and Tunisia as well) I’ve noticed a lot of younger people, at least in Marrakesh, tend to prefer English, even though French is more widely-used and more people speak French fluently.
French has a lot of associations with colonialism and the past, whereas English is seen as more contemporary and cosmopolitan.
The largest country in Africa finally made the news. Cool.
French is going out of fashion.
damn now they won’t be able to migrate to Canada /s
I wonder if english will eventually replace every language
Sooo…Will Algerian go to England now?
Good! The less we share the better
Good. I hope the rest of Africa will follow.
French here, despite all the tensions between our countries it seems to be a logical move. Even in France we often have to translate our university research papers in english.
salute 🫡
as a french i think its good, because english is more useful in todays world, since it’s one of the main language for everything. That’s what helped Singapore to globalize fast for exemple. So if any country can adopt english, especielly in their schools, it’s a good thing that will help any nations to move forward
RUUUUULLLLLLEEEEE BRITANNIA!!!!
why don’t they use arabic? how many algerians have english good enough to study at university through the langauge?
It is mostly a political move at this point, due to the increased tension between Algeria and France (got worse recently).
It will take a few years before students and teachers are all getting used to it and ramping up their English skills.
For those who don’t understand why attitudes in Africa are shifting against france, as an African, ill explain:
It’s because france treated and continues to treat its former colonies like shit, and that’s documented, with their brutal occupation and colonisation, then with its neocolonial economic and financial policies. As well as its constant intervention,it’s role in various coups, clandestine operations, mercenaries like bob denard, disgusting scale of theft of natural resources using French companies and shady business dealings, as well of it’s support and protection for all types of currupt, authoritarian leaders, war criminals armed groups, war Lords and dictators. Funny how some say france supports democracy in Africa, but don’t mention that for decades france had been arming, supporting and protecting dictators like:
President of Equatorial guinea: longest serving President in the world 44 years in power
Paul Biya of Cameroon: 43 years in power and second longest serving non royal head of
Idris Deby of Chad: more than three decades in power before he died
Denis Sassougo of Congo: in power since 1997
These are just some examples, there’s so much more, not to mention the war Lords and armed groups and mercenaries.
If France doesn’t like that now almost half of its former colonies have left or are planning to leave system of Frenchafrique, get rid of french bases and stop french language, then France only got themselves and Frenchafrique to blame. Because with such colonial legacy, it’s bound to be that people will get sick of it.
pieds-noirs crying in their pastis.
English is the language of McDonald’s. ´meuricah…
Come on, good luck. I’m fine with these goats talking something else.
I am afraid Algeria won’t be alone.. if African universities want to really thrive, they have no choice English. Economically speaking of course
