I’m from Sweden but I visit Finland often since my partner is from Österbotten/Pohjanmaa. Every time I visit I always notice how alcohol is significantly more expensive in Finland than it is here in Sweden when you buy from the store. What is the reason for this? Is it some kind of tariff or tax that Finland has on alcohol that is much higher than what we have here in Sweden?

Every time I try and support the local craft brewing scene in Finland by buying locally I feel like I’m buying beer brewed in tanks made of gold. It’s quite standard to pay 4 € for a local craft beer in a 330 mL can. It definitely hurts the wallet! But I gotta admit there is only so much Rainbow/Coop lager I can drink before I want something palatable 😅.

  1. Alko is often kind of expensive when it comes lower alcohol percentage stuff. I wouldn’t buy beer from Alko, the same stuff is usually available in a supermarket for cheaper

  2. Alcohol tax and government owns alko. The amount of elder alcoholics we have it is a must anyway.

They put a heavy load on our medical care.

  3. We need to tax alcohol heavily or else people wouldnt drink anything else and couldnt afford to pay for all extra healthcare costs it would bring.

  4. In Finland “there is no family too poor to afford beer.”

As you see, we have expensive alcohol.

For people to afford alcohol they need good social security.

To afford good social security the government needs high tax income.

The high government income comes from high taxes, including tax on alcohol, making it expensive.

So for people to afford alcohol they need good social security…

  5. I used to live in Italy. Now, I am almost dried up in Finland. It’s too expensive to drink a good beer here.

  6. 1,39€ in Tesco Slovakia. 0,99€ if you have the clubcard.

  7. People buy it anyway. They skip food if they have to.

  8. So that Finns can cross over into Estonia and support Estonian economy by buying alcohol in Tallinn.

  9. Cries in Norwegian. Urquell costs 47 NOK (≈€4.20 when the NOK isn’t as low as right now) for a 0,5l can here. Even heavier taxation than in Finland. I lived in Finland for six years and always thought alcohol was super cheap there. The cheapest of the cheap lager that can be had here in Norway is still like 25 NOK for a 0,5l can.

  10. It’s the bridge from Denmark to Sweden. You can drive it over with a truck. To get to Finland you have to take a ferry.

Just look at soma postal differences, it’s up to 20€ cheaper to mail to Sweden than it is to Finland.

  11. Because Finland is a shithole nanny state. Yes, even worse than Sweden.

  12. Yeah alcohol has really high taxation. I usually travel to Estonia once a year to buy cheaper alcohol from there in a bulk.

  13. Taxation. The talk about Alko’s profit margins is just another tax, as it’s government owned.

Sysb is basically cheaper by one third on everything.

  14. Absurd taxation. Alcohol addiction or any kind of substance addictions are rarely prevented by “prices”

    but some countries think otherwise.

  15. I’m a seasoned craft beer drinker and it’s honestly robbery. It’s the same bs of monopolies controlling markets and isolating the markets for profit.

  16. Alko has a completely predictable mathematical model to price their products. It mainly causes higher prices in the lower tier products, but it can also on occasion lead to lower cost premium products because they do not care about what the general market rate of such product is. Some special order products can include these “bargains”.

  17. Volume. Systembolaget at least used to be the biggest purchaser of alcohol in the world.

  18. 1,68 euros is very cheap for Urquel, I think it’s over an euro even in Czech.

  19. Hey! If it costs twice as much, we’ll drink twice as much of it. Och sen vi ska bada bastu!

  20. No sane person buys beer from Alko. Go to a regular Prisma, prices are way cheaper.

  21. Finland whole country is taxed to death and no politician has balls to do anything about it. Should cut all taxation by 50% minimum would help a bit even…

  22. Urquell at least is generally less expensive in regular food stores. Somewhere between 2,50 and 3€ so still way more than 1,68€, but less of a difference.

But yeah, I’d say it’s some difference in taxation but also profit margins.
