ČESKÉ BUDĚJOVICE, Czechia — Former St. Cloud State forward

Jenniina Nylund

gave Finland an unlikley 4-3 overtime win over Czechia in the bronze medal game of the 2025 IIHF Women’s World Championship on Sunday, April 20.

Nylund scored at 4:52 of overtime for the game-winner to help finish off a comeback from a 3-0 deficit. Nylund, 25, played for the Huskies from 2018-23 and is playing pro hockey for Brynas IF in Sweden. Nylund, who is from Pietarsaari, had two goals and an assist in seven games in the tournament. She had 21 goals and 39 points in 41 games for Brynas IF.

Nylund is one of four players with ties to SCSU who played for Finland in the tournament. The other players are freshman goaltender Emilia Kyrkkö (Nokia), sophomore forward

Sofianna Sundelin

(Ulvila), freshman defender Siiri Yrjölä (Vantaa) and goaltender

Sanni Ahola

(Helsinki), who played for the Huskies from 2020-25.

Kyrkkö was 1-2 with a 5.56 goals-against average and .827 save percentage in three games. Ahola was 3-1 with a 3.44 GAA and .854 save percentage in four games, including 28 saves in the bronze medal game.

Sundelin played in all seven games, but did not have a point. Yrjölä did not have a point in six games.

Klára Hymlárová,

who played for the Huskies from 2019-24, played in all seven games for Czechia and had a goal and an assist in the tournament. Hymlárová has one assist in 26 games this season playing for the PWHL’s Minnesota Frost.

Laura Zimmermann,

who recently completed her redshirt sophomore season as a wing for SCSU, did not have a point in six games played for Switzerland.

There were two players with SCSU ties who played for Germany.

Svenja Voigt, a wing from Cologne, played in five games and had two assists for Germany. Voigt recently completed her junior season with the Huskies.

Laura Kluge, a 28-year-old wing from Berlin, had a goal and three assists in five games for Germany. Kluge has two assists in 10 games this season for the PWHL’s Toronto Sceptres.

In the gold medal game, the United States defeated Canada 4-3 in overtime.

The tournament drew 122,331, which is a record for the event.
