Majority of Israelis support ending war in Gaza, peace activist Itamar Avneri says • FRANCE 24

A leading Israeli peace activist has spoken to FRANCE 24 about how people need to pick a side in the Middle East conflict. But he says those sides are the right-wing Israeli government and Hamas, as opposed to the Israeli people and the Palestinian people, both of whom want peace. Itamar Avneri is a founding member of the Israeli grassroots movement Standing Together. He spoke to us before attending a conference for peace at Paris’s City Hall. Organised with the NGO Les Guerrières de la Paix, the event is bringing together Israeli and Palestinian peace activists in a bid to find concrete solutions. He joined us on Perspective.

  5. One day, Israelis will learn the hard way that their country is a fiction made to enrich military contractors. And no one will cry for them as they will experience the same indifference they had for the Palestinian people they colonized and oppressed since 1948. They are the final victim of their own racism.

  9. I wish more kind souls were in power there, may be reconciliation, and peace can finally be reached in one state or two states or something in-between. But they are a minority and much has to be done to deprogram the supremacist thinking and break the hate cycle in which both sides are trapped.

  21. It's good that there are sane Israeli individuals, he is a realist , he doesn't shy away from raising points that led to this conflict , occupation.

  23. Thanks for all the new positive approach to current day life or current day problems…!

    Let's try and analysise things a bit…:

    1. Nature is continous….past present and thereby future (PPF) are interlinked and PPF is there for everything..! Let's concentrate on valuable present.

    2. We have big traditional institutions like United Nations ( UN )… News Channels covering Governments ..war etc. We have present life …and present day problems..! Life is vast we have good things in life too! Concentrating on present day problems…like wars in Middleast Gaza Ukraine Russia, starvation in Africa, health care as in hospitals etc…needs immediate attention ..! Since these Problems are lingering long…these traditional Institutions Like the UN, individual Govts, NATO etc are not effective in solving things immediately.

    3. We have new technology now like internet, travel etc..which are connecting people across nations together. If people are good and they unite…solutions can be achieved fast. Everything is done for people only right..? People are generally hardworking grounded and peaceful…!

    4. So if we use the new technology ( collective human wisdom ) we can enrich the traditional Institutions like UN ..Govts..corporates or industries…! The so called social media or the individual voices and opinions of people…if this wisdom is used or employed…we can change our world for good & fast.

    5. There are all kind of times….Food takes time to grow in fields, trees…it takes time to make nations..armies…even weapons etc…!

    6. But if this available collective wisdom is used..we can guide things towards acceptable good…for all. The traditional institutions ( UN , Governments etc) even a home or building bring stability. So collective wisdom will solve problems quickly and Traditional institutions will stabilise that solution for long run.

    7. So rather than a general news coverage of a problem like war famine etc….we need to analyse and indentify the source of problems…and bring or innovate solutions to the problems.

    That will make a better world for all…hopefully for animals and plants too…!

    8. We know we all are trying….trying very hard…there are continous discussions in Televisions etc. We need to employ these valuable opinions, wisdom and bring fast solutions. Each of us across all ages can contribute because it is all of our world. We should be open to good changes. It is just the change in mindset that is required rather and more physical change in ground. We don't need mindless urbanisation.

    9. Dignity is big thing especially for women…so we have to presume women will express and lead us to be more civilized…settled and be peaceful. Women represents civilization or adab qaida…!

    10. So the future has to be about these solutions…and we need to engage people ….and bring necessary changes fast…! Cause the problems as in Gaza are painful …de-human and intolerable, unacceptable. We have to heal and wipe out the curse the soonest…! People are braving these problems on ground that's such a positive thing..! We need to reach help and rescue to them…through a united world. Hope these collective strength wisdom and solutions reach at all levels…soonest. Let us agree and achieve to World Peace..through trust and cooperations. Ceasation of big wars will catalyze to solve other problems too..!

    11. We have so many eyes body and brains…to change things for good. Change is big thing and should be discussed thoroughly…! More we discuss among us…more it will be accepted fast and owned by all and be more stable…natural.

  24. He's a lovely young man, but it doesn't seem that all Israelis want to end the war for the sake of the Palestinians. They don't care. They want the prisoners back that's all. Let's hope his group and others in Israel manage to convince more and more people.
