Hey guys I have the great idea!!! Why don’t we put neutron accelerators on the tips of our neutron control rods!!!!
Of course, it was not the first time the same kind of reactor failed the test. But making test is not the problem. I worked in nuclear industry and we were still making some test sometimes. That s how you improve and learn.
The only problem is to removed more control bar than allowed.
The graphite tips caused a reactivity excursion in Chornobyl in 1982 and Leningrad 1983, the latter with a number of casualties and radioactive emissions. The problem was well known.
However, a) Soviet government was paranoid and classified literally everything as top secret – they literally could not understand how e.g. Western airlines or nuclear power plants openly shared safety relevant data across national borders, and believed it to be a hoax – and b) there was a fight between Dolleschal (the KB leader developing pressure tube reactors like RBMK) and Afrikantov (VVER reactors), which Dolleshal won by burying issues like the power excursion possibilities, because winning in a personal competition is of course more important than delivering a safe product.
