**Talks with Putin did nothing to stop war, says Warsaw**

The Polish prime minister has compared President Macron’s talks with President Putin to negotiating with Hitler, criticising the French leader’s attempts to find a diplomatic solution to the war in Ukraine.

“President Macron, how many times have you negotiated with Putin? What have you achieved? Have you stopped any of the actions that have taken place?” Mateusz Morawiecki said. “Criminals are not negotiated with, criminals must be fought. Nobody negotiated with Hitler. You would negotiate with Hitler, with Stalin, with Pol Pot afterwards?”

Poland has been frustrated by European resistance to stronger sanctions against Russia, including on the energy exports that much of the Continent relies on, and wants a more ambitious programme for arming Ukraine. Macron has spoken to Putin at least 17 times since December.

The EU has paid Russia nearly €19 billion for energy since the war began on February 24, according to the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air, a European think tank.

“Enough of this game of the delay of some European leaders, manoeuvring, spinning,” Morawiecki said. “Strong sanctions are needed, those that will break Putin’s war machine, otherwise more innocent people will die.”

Macron called for a new round of sanctions and appeared to agree that they should target the Russian oil and gas industry, after saying there were “clear indications of war crimes” in Ukraine. It follows the discovery of a mass grave in Bucha, a town outside Kyiv. “Those behind these crimes must answer for them,” Macron told the French broadcaster Inter.

Liz Truss, the foreign secretary, will meet her Ukrainian counterpart in Warsaw today to discuss tougher sanctions. “Putin is yet to show he is serious about diplomacy. A tough approach from the UK and our allies is vital to strengthen Ukraine’s hand in negotiations,” she said.

  2. Zelensky himself asked Macron a few times to talk to Putin. It is not up to Poland to tell Macron to stop trying to talk with Putin to stop this war.

  3. Crystal clear hindsight from the Polish prime minister here.

Personally, I’d negotiate with satan himself if it conceded no advantage and if I thought it had even a small chance of stopping massacres like we see in Bucha.

Macron was right to try diplomacy to avert the war. Of course we now know that the die had already been cast. But what were we supposed to do, go straight to full scale economic warfare while it still seemed like it was possible to stop the shooting from starting in the first place?

France are supporting new sanctions. I don’t know what taking pot shots at Macron for seeking a diplomatic solution first is supposed to achieve.

  4. Poland is happy to fight to the last Ukrainian.

Poland blocked every try of more integrated Europe for years.

Poland don’t want to negotiate. Let’s fight to the end. End of what, nobody knows but let’s fight.

  5. I’m observing what PIS is doing for many many years and still don’t understand situations like this.

So yeah, I guess it was supposed to show their Polish voters that they are strong and others in the EU are weak and naive, to get some internal support.

But, like, seriously, we have elections in France in a week. If they shit-talk Macron (and it’s a rare situation when actually Europe listens to Poland at least a little bit) they will get Le Pen, who is pro-Putin and anti-NATO article 5.

    I’m so confused.

  6. The PiS government is campaigning the shit out of the Ukraine-War for political benefit and so far this has been tolerated because they have been doing a lot of good things but at some point it just gets annoying and destructive.

  7. On the other hand, government officials are congratulating openly pro Putin Orban. Degeneracy of PiS doesn’t surprise me.

  8. Poland has alot to say lately considering how their economy, people happiness, nazism, and corruption are working out

  9. Okay – The wording is very harsh, but (!) – Seriously Macron?

Never negotiate with monsters – I don’t know how many times we have to repeat the history, how many books, series we have to see to start understanding things like this.

Plus Russians were taught a specific way of negotiating where not only do they get away with their atrocities, but they also get what they want.

  10. what? this title is misleading. it’s Morawiecki, not Poland and he said that “no one negotiated with Hitler” and asked Macron how many times he called Putin already. Stop spreading fake news.

  11. And keeping some sort of contact is the smart thing to do. Well what do you expect from them anyway. Brainlet party for and from brainlet people.
