When he heads to New Zealand to film Taskmaster Australia challenges, comedian Tom Cashman is aware of how lush the setting is on screen.
Britain’s Alex Horne, who created the comedy format, keeps reminding him.
“Alex is always saying how jealous he is at the NZ Taskmaster and how much room there is, because their one is very tight,” he tells TV Tonight.
“There’s a caravan, a shed, a path down to the lake, a big house with a driveway, and a big field.
“It’s basically about a week (of filming) per contestant, so maybe a few days short of five weeks near Auckland.”
Kevin and Co. is the New Zealand production company which makes the show, and was already producing a NZ version prior to the 10 series.
But filming has also expanded to incorporate an Australian location, in the current series on Cockatoo Island in Sydney.
“It seems like that’s the new move, I guess to do another week in Australia somewhere, which the UK do pretty much every season just to mix it up visually.”
Cashman, better known as ‘Lesser Tom’ beside Taskmaster’s Tom Gleeson, has also proven popular with TV Tonight readers, voting him as Most Underrated Performer in site awards, only behind Aaron Chen and Sam Pang.
“What the hell, these are two of the most popular people in Australia. Underrated? Come on!” he laughs.
“Underrated is a bit like a compliment wrapped in an insult, isn’t it? Obviously there’s two components to it, how much they like this person and how much they think society likes this person?
“If they think Aaron Chen and Sam Pang aren’t very popular they’re completely wrong.”
Cashman has recently concluded his Melbourne Comedy Festival season 2 Truths, 1 Lie & 17 Slight Exaggerations, which he also plans to take to Edinburgh. He’s hopeful of more Taskmaster Australia (Season 5 has already been completed).
“I don’t really think past a year. I mean that’s the fun thing about this industry, you can’t see that far in the future but there’s always potential for an exciting email at any time you can walk around with that but I’m My dream I think I’m a bit of a similar towards gonna take it six months for six months, but I’m trying to like
“Kind of what’s happening now is what I hoped as a young comedian would happen, in terms of working, making a decent living, touring and being part of a comedy show collaborating with people I respect.
“Being creative and getting to perform …more of what I’m doing right now.”
Taskmaster Australia screens 8:30pm Thursday on 10.
