NOTTINGHAM, UK – Patrick Larkin, a forward with the McGill University men’s hockey team has completed his final exams for the semester and is currently overseas trying out with the Great Britain national team at their training camp in Nottingham, in preparation for the upcoming IIHF world championships for Division 1, Group A, in Romania. The tournament is slated for April 27 to May 3 at the Sepsi Arena in the town of Sfântu Gheorghe.

Larkin, a third-year student majoring in International Development Studies, was born in Swindon (UK) and is one of two McGill hockey products currently in the UK camp, along with Nathanael Halbert (BA ’20), a former co-captain of the McGill squad, who made his debut for the British national team last year.

Another McGill hockey grad associated with the UK national team program is Patrick’s father, Bryan Larkin (BCom 89), a McGill Sports Hall of Fame defenceman who now serves as managing director of CCM UK, the official equipment partner of the British team.

Halbert, 29, was born in Nottingham and raised in Richmond Hill, Ont. A six-foot, 194-pound defenceman, he patrolled the McGill blue line from 2016 to 2020. After graduating, he played parts of two seasons with the American Hockey League’s Laval Rocket, before heading to the UK. From 2021 to 2023, he skated for the Coventry Blaze of Britain’s Elite Ice Hockey League, then spent a season with Innsbruck HC in Austria and played in Slovakia this year with Zvolen HKM. Last spring, Halbert tallied once in seven games at the IIHF Worlds and was selected twice as GBR’s player of the game.

Six countries will compete for gold at the upcoming IIHF tourney, including Romania, Great Britain, Poland, Japan, Italy and Ukraine. The tourney will feature 15 contests and the stakes are high as the top two teams will be promoted to the elite group, while the last-place squad will be relegated to Division I, Group B.
