  1. “I simply couldn’t think what to get you… and then I saw this lovely little primary surplus and thought of you!”

Greece on a surprisingly solid economic trajectory recently.

  2. Greece had put in some hard years to be in this position. Great progress for my Greek friends

  3. Im happy for Greece and Ill make sure im going to add to it by spending my holiday there.

  4. Pretty good recovery, since their financial problems that occurred from their Olympics, in 2004.

  5. All they had to do is force people to work 6 days a week

  6. Can’t wait for this recovery to translate to the well being for us Greeks!

    Oh wait…

  7. It’s not surprising at all. The government’s have been bleeding us dry for the better part of two decades, while completely dismantling public education and healthcare.

One would expect that at this point some of that money would go back into these institutions, but nope.

We are completely and truly F’ed.

  8. Great news, but Greece has no doubt also suffered from austerity, due to bankers’ actions, to the detriment of the poor.

I fully welcome stronger finances now, but it should now look to invest in public spending again as soon as possible.

  9. You go Greece, I remember when we started to get this type of news in Portugal too, feels good

  10. Congratulations, Greece! Hopefully you can get it to good use!

  11. This means that they can finally get to have nice things? After they balanced their accounts?

  12. Bless our brothers and sisters from Greece, they have suffered some hardships but this is such great news!

  13. Cmon lads!!! It fills me with joy to see fellow EU countries improve so much. Anyone remembers the PIGS acronym, ten years ago? Portugal, Spain, and now Greece, have all done amazing steps. I wish Italy did the same

  14. Respectfully, Greeks are being taxed to hell and back (same tax burden as Germany), and are forced to spend 30% of their salaries electronically, not including rent and utilities when these tend to be near 50%. This leaves, at most, 20 to 10% of your salary to save.

These austerity measures NEED to be lessened, first and foremost, with a proper initial income tax break. Investment needs to be at the forefront of government policy, both private and public. Unemployment is damn near 10%, and good luck getting a proper career as a young adult.

With interest payments in now manageable levels, please, focus on growth to lessen debt %. Use any money after servicing the interest on investments, and stop with the purchasing of foreign weapons. Defence is already at 3% and has been for a long time, fuck trump and his insane demand of 5%.

Greece has already lost so much from austerity, start healing some of that.

  15. So what is the cause of the unexpected windfall? Higher tax revenue, or lower expenditure? And if lower expenditure, lower expenditure on what?

  16. wow Omada Alitheias has infiltrated reddit, I can’t say I didn’t expect that, keep bleeding out my fellow Greeks, soon™ we’ll be free

  17. Fantastic country with fantastic people. Every time I go there things look improved, more modern, more efficient but without losing the Greek spirit!

  18. Amazing, but can someone explain how this is happening? I’m not aware of recent policy changes but I haven’t really done the reading

  19. That’s great news. Even more importantly in my opinion, there is also an overall surplus (so including interest rate expenses) of 1.3%. That’s a decent amount of fiscal space to either boost spending or lower taxes.

  20. I guess the EU is working well… inagine what wouldve/would happend if the EU didnt exist

  21. Well done, then my holiday in Kreta last year was a good investment.
And I would always rather have my vacation in greece/europe then flying to turkey even if its more expensive.

  22. Don’t let this fool you. This doesn’t translate to a better life for the average joe. We have the lowest buying power in the eu.

  23. Actually great to see the money put into the country wasnt wasted

  24. This feels like they’re cooking the books again.

  25. The replies here are delusional. The situation for the people living in the country is terrible. We are being taxed to oblivion with cost of living the same as in germany. Meanwhile most people don’t earn more than 1000 euro.

  26. Didn’t Greece implement six-day work week? That would explain a lot… Nevertheless, good work!

  27. The definition of a pyrrhic victory. I wonder if they also celebrated their impending doom.
