  1. I mean, Expats always get much better salary and benefits.

  2. I have two friends who got their teaching degree here in the US and then went abroad. Both had a horrific experience. Nothing like this.

I wonder how much of this is location?

  3. I had a friend that became a teacher in the US, went abroad (Japan) for over 20 years and then came back to teach. While things weren’t free over there for him, a lot of the other things he could vouch for.

  4. When people choose to teach in China, they often become part of a system that hides the government’s human rights abuses—like mass surveillance, censorship, and the oppression of ethnic groups—by presenting a polished image to outsiders. While it might seem like just a job, their presence supports state-run institutions and helps the government look more open and friendly than it really is. In reality, they’re helping legitimize a regime that silences its own people and punishes those who speak out.

  5. English teaching is really great. I do it in Taiwan. But there are disadvantages namely that it’s a dead end for the most part.

  6. Sure is a lot of astroturfing from China in here lately.

  7. it’s the west people crisis that every country suffer from it ,,, that said , just you should have US or EU passports to have fatty salary on east countries ,,, and then china called themself first world country loool

  8. I spent a lot of time in China, teachers don’t get paid better, quality of life isn’t better, the place is packed with smog and the water smelled like burning sulfur outside of the nicest hotels.

the country is beautiful in many ways as are the people IF you have money

  9. You are a commodity, the more scarce you are the better the situation for you. English teachers are a dime a dozen in the USA, but in China they are very scarce, so it’s probably an upper tier school and dedicated talented students.

  10. Really don’t care why she prefers it. America needs teachers who care for the kids. If she doesn’t then she can stay the hell over there.

  11. I’d like to know more about what exactly she teaches, especially as she claims she is paid a better wage in China.

English teachers used to be everywhere in China in the late 2000s/early 2010s, then I believe that market dropped off quite a bit. They would have made OK wages for China but nothing comparable with Western wages at the time.

  12. I was a Special Education teacher from the Philippines and can confirm the classroom experience part. Classroom management is so much easier there than it is here- my students there were well-behaved and respected teachers, no need to convince or motivate them to learn. However, I didn’t get free food nor housing and I got paid a meager $160/month which was barely enough for rent alone. I got paid a lot more in the US but teaching and classroom management were way more difficult. During the pandemic I realized I couldn’t do it anymore because I witnessed the steady decline in motivation and erosion of attention spans over the past decade (I attribute it to the rise of mobile devices and social media)

  13. According to the title, because English grammar is not checked

  14. English teachers in China are heavily overpaid. It’s possible there will be a regulation in the future.
