LC student here, and since I know a lot of us have been hoping to find this tape for a while, I figured I’d have a go at trying to find it.

I remembered hearing it in my JC class as all of us did, so I spoke to my JC Irish teacher and sure enough she sent me this a couple days later.

A few things to note:

• Some people have said they think it’s from *Fonn 2.* This tape was found in *An dTuigeann Tú?.*

• This seems to differ slightly from how some people remember it. While I doubt there are multiple versions, sorry if this isn’t what you were thinking of.

• Sorry if this has already been found, I did a quick search before posting but I may have missed something.

• Sorry about the quality! This is how it was sent to me.

I’ve uploaded the file here: https://clyp.it/fgyi4ro5?token=85f0fa68fabeeccecad44a2d099d4099
(Sorry, I don’t know how to make text the link lol)

  1. So it’s almost 30 years ago since i left school but jesus the quality of that audio brought me back!

Doing aural exams and the teacher would play the worst quality audio imaginable and no matter how good your French / Irish / German might be you couldn’t understand a fucking word due to the appalling quality of the tape combined with people shuffling in their seats and another class outside doing PE.

Like … what? My future depends on this result and I didn’t catch a fucking word of it as it sounds like the audio was recorded on an airport runway and Mr. O’Brien is outside the window next to my seat shouting at the second years to run faster.

  2. I wanna say about u/SINGTHES0RR0W, they greatly enhanced their reputation over the last few weeks, they were the one who uploaded the legendary Is mise Bart Simpson tape.

  3. Oh my god I haven’t heard that in about 15 years. I just remember the tapes playing and me in a pure panic because even after 12 years of learning Irish I couldn’t understand a word on those. And the more you thought “oh my god I don’t understand” the less you’d be able to focus on listening. It was a vicious circle 😅

  4. It’s funny how over the years when you don’t hear something your imagination alters it somehow, I definitely had it in my head that it was a D4 accent doing the Bart Simpson tape but it definitely has come screaming back to me now.

Maith an fear for going to the effort of getting this!

  5. Oh my god, we had this in the mid 90s. We all absolutely burst our shites laughing and the teacher fully lost control of the class when they played this one

  6. This is why the past should be left dead and buried ;_; I thought I’d left the horror of the LC behind a long time ago

  7. lord, i remember both the cd player AND the tape recorder. absolute terror when your one was hauling in that huge tape recorder and fighting back tears cuz couldnt understand a fecking word being said no matter how many times they replayed the same sections. 😂😂

  8. Amazing! Haven’t heard this in about 20 years. I remember the voice being even more ridiculous but that probably just got exaggerated in my memory over the years. I love how it starts with so much energy, then the guy just seems so fed up by the end.

  9. The madman. I’ve searched the internet for this many a time. You’ve provided a great service here. Get it up on YouTube as well, keep it archived for future generations.

  10. We could try and contact the company that produced it and get the original digital recording if available.

OP, if you get the chance could you provide picutures of the cassette tape cover? There should be information on the recording studio as well as the company who produced it.

  11. I’m not sure what I’m more impressed by.

That you uploaded something that probably every Irish person has wondered about.
Or that your username is a reference to an incredible and underrated album.

    Good job Op.

  12. I spent days trying to track this down about 4 years ago. I went as far as to email the author of Fonn 2 and received a very nice but confused response. Unfortunately she couldn’t help because they had written so many of those aural exercises over the years.

OP you’ve absolutely made my week with this. Thank you for uploading it.
