‘Utter vandalism’: owner of pub strips listed tiles after row with neighbours

  1. I know this is quite local news but it’s a pretty wild story if the owner did in fact remove the building’s 100-year-old tiles out of spite.

  2. If this guy is prick enough to hire builders to destroy those tiles out of spite I don’t have much doubt that his plan to house refugees is a scam.

  3. >Mr Southall told local media this month he had bought the pub “on a whim” before launching an £85,000 crowdfunder to do it up and allow Ukrainian women and children to live there for three years.

    Wow.

  4. Why does he need to remove the tiles? I assume they do not affect the structural integrity of the building in any way, they are just aesthetic. It sounds like he is trying to hide behind Ukrainian refugees to avoid criticism over this unpopular move.

  5. If the council stop any more of the tiles being removed, it is difficult to see what he can actually do other than replace those now missing.

Otherwise he will have permanently turned the pub into an eyesore out of spite.

  6. Sounds to me like he was going to house Ukrainian refugees for three years, to get the building changed to residential status. Then after three years rent the flats out and take in the money.

  7. That’s really sad, it’s a such a beautiful pub. The iridescent tiles at the top with the text haven’t been touched, they look really hard to replace, hopfully the green ones can be put back on and are not smashed.
