WASHINGTON (TNND) — The White House on Wednesday said it will install two 100-foot flagpoles, which President Donald Trump will pay for out of his own pocket.
Both the North and South lawns of the White House will be adorned with a flag, Trump told reporters. He said the additions have been sorely needed at the White House for hundreds of years.
“They’ve needed flag poles for 200 years,” he said. “It was something I’ve often said ‘they don’t have a flag pole.’”
The White House features one flagpole atop its roof which flies the American flag 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Since 2019, the POW/MIA flag has also flown over the White House.
Trump notably directed the American flag to fly at full staff over the Capitol on Inauguration Day, despite the recent death of former President Jimmy Carter. He also recently directed flags to fly at half-staff to honor the late Pope Francis.
While the president of the United States has his own flag, depicting an eagle against a dark blue field, it does not fly over the White House. Presidents have some authority over which flags are displayed at the White House, such as when former President Joe Biden adorned the White House with a LGBT Pride flag to commemorate Pride Month.
The White House in 1918 flew a Serbian flag alongside the American flag to commemorate “Serbia Day,” according to the U.S. Embassy in Serbia. The White House in 1920 also flew a French flag to recognize the 131st anniversary of Bastille Day.
