I’m considering carrying my Victorinox Huntsman Wood (link: https://www.victorinox.com/en-DE/Products/Swiss-Army-Knives/Medium-Pocket-Knives/Huntsman-Wood/p/1.3711.63#product-details) in Berlin for everyday tasks like opening packages and light outdoor use. The knife has a blade length under 12 cm, requires two hands to open, and doesn’t have a locking mechanism.
From what I understand, these features mean it doesn’t fall under the restrictions of §42a of the German Weapons Act. However, I’m aware there are areas where carrying any knife might be prohibited.
Can anyone confirm if it’s legal to carry this knife in public in Berlin? Also, are there specific places or situations I should avoid carrying it?
Thanks in advance for your insights!

Everything you said is correct. It’s legal to carry, except in those zones.
Within the three weapon free zones of berlin specified on the maps to be found here https://www.berlin.de/polizei/polizeimeldungen/fakten-hintergruende/artikel.1520041.php or more properly within the official ordinance here https://gesetze.berlin.de/bsbe/document/aiz-jlr-WaffFVerbotVBE2025rahmen%4020250215, which are also marked with signs, carrying pocket knifes is illegal. Otherwise pocket knifes are legal
Dont bring it to a gun fight
You are right. It is generally legal and not considered a weapon. However there can be certain areas that are considered high risk (like train stations, busy party districts) and are declared as “Waffenverbotszone” where you cannot carry anything that remotely resembles a weapon, even small utility knifes.
The list for Berlin is here: https://www.berlin.de/polizei/polizeimeldungen/fakten-hintergruende/artikel.1520041.php
It is allowed except in weapon-free zones. The problem is that some train stations are weapon-free zones (some only at night) and Berlin has plans to make all stations and trains weapons-free zone. So if you use public transport it is a pain on the butt.
Well, you wont be able to bring it into a club or any other location that does a body search before entering.
Ok I definitely won’t be able to go around without using public transport, and I don’t want to have my knife confiscated, so I’ll just keep it in my luggage and not in my pocket
