HOW THESE TARIFFS CAN IMPACT THE CENTRAL VALLEY. GOVERNOR GAVIN NEWSOM AND ATTORNEY GENERAL OF CALIFORNIA ROB BONTA ARE USING A LAWSUIT TO CHALLENGE THE PRESIDENT’S AUTHORITY TO ENACT THE SERIES OF TARIFFS. VISIT CALIFORNIA ANNOUNCEMENT. WE MADE 48 HOURS AGO IS INDICATIVE OF THE KIND OF PROACTIVE WORK WE’LL BE DOING TO REACH OUT TO OUR TRADING PARTNERS AND MAKE THE CASE THAT CALIFORNIA HAS THEIR BACK, AND WE WANT THEM BACK VISITING THIS STATE. WE WANT THEM CONTINUING TO TRADE WITH THIS STATE. WE WANT TO CONTINUE TO MAINTAIN OUR DOMINANCE. NEWSOM SAYS THE TARIFFS HAVE CREATED ECONOMIC CHAOS, DRIVEN UP PRICES AND HARMED BUSINESSES. I’VE GOT FOUR KIDS. 80% OF THEIR TOYS UNDER THEIR CHRISTMAS TREE COME FROM CHINA. I’VE GOT FAMILY MEMBERS LIVING PAYCHECK TO PAYCHECK. MANY FAMILY MEMBERS. THE LAWSUIT ARGUES THAT THE PRESIDENT DOES NOT HAVE THE AUTHORITY TO UNILATERALLY IMPOSE TARIFFS AGAINST MEXICO, CHINA AND CANADA OR CREATE AN ACROSS THE BOARD 10% TARIFF. THE REALITY IS, THE U.S. CONSTITUTION GIVES CONGRESS THE POWER OF THE PURSE. IT’S CONGRESS’S RESPONSIBILITY TO SET AND COLLECT TAXES, DUTIES AND EXCISES, INCLUDING, YES, TARIFFS, NOT THE PRESIDENT’S. FARMERS IN THE CENTRAL VALLEY SAY IT HAS AN IMPACT ON THEM AS WELL. LAST TIME THEY REDEVELOPED FOR $4 A SPRINKLER. IF IT TRIPLES, CAN I AFFORD 12,000 SPRINKLERS AT $12 EACH? IT’S JUST I’M DOING A LOT OF LITTLE MATH EQUATIONS IN MY HEAD THAT END UP WITH BIG NUMBERS. LAST MONTH, THE GOVERNOR SENT BURNER PHONES TO THE CEOS OF THE LARGEST COMPANIES HEADQUARTERED IN CALIFORNIA WITH HIS DIRECT LINE PROGRAMED INTO THEM. HAVE THOSE CEOS DISCUSSED TARIFFS WITH YOU NOW THROUGH THIS NEW LINE OF. COMMUNICATION? IT’S INTERESTING. I MEAN, ALL OF THEM. THERE’S NOT ONE THAT HAS EXPRESSED ANYTHING DIFFERENTLY. ALL OF THEM HAVE BROUGHT THE ISSUE OF TARIFFS UP AND UNCERTAINTY. CAN YOU ELABORATE? OF COURSE. I MEAN, IT’S JUST IT’S I SAID THE WORST ON GALLON IN THE HISTORY OF THIS COUNTRY. ONE OF THE MOST SELF-DESTRUCTIVE THINGS THAT WE’VE EXPERIENCED IN MODERN AMERICAN HISTORY. GOVERNOR GAVIN NEWSOM DID SAY HE REACHED OUT TO THE WHITE HOUSE IN REGARDS TO THE LAWSUIT TO GIVE THEM A HEADS UP, BUT HE HAS NOT SPOKEN WITH PRESIDENT TRUMP DIRECTLY. WE DIDN’T WANT TO GO DOWN THIS PATH. WE WERE HOPING WE DIDN’T NEED TO GO DOWN THIS PATH, BUT WE PREPARED TO GO DOWN THIS PATH. IN STANISLAUS COUNTY, I’M ANAHITA JAFARI, KCRA THREE NEWS. WE DID REACH OUT TO PRESIDENT TRUMP’S ADMINISTRATION FOR RESPONSE. A WHITE HOUSE SPOKESPERSON SAID, QUOTE, INSTEAD OF FOCUSING ON CALIFORNIA’S RAMPANT CRIME, HOMELESSNESS AND UNAFFORDABILITY. GAVIN NEWSOM IS SPENDING HIS TIME TRYING TO BLOCK PRESIDENT TRUMP’S HISTORIC EFFORTS TO FINALLY ADDRESS THE NATIONAL EMERGENCY OF OUR COUNTRY’S PERSISTENT GOODS TRADE DEFICITS. THE ENTIRE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION REMAINS COMMITTED TO ADDRESSING THIS NATIONAL EMERGENCY THAT IS DECIMATING AMERICA’S INDUSTRIES AND LEAVING OUR WORKERS BEHIND WITH EVERY TOOL AT OUR DISPOSAL, FROM TARIFFS TO NEGOTIATIONS, END QUOTE. The data comes from the International Monetary Fund and the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. According to the governor’s office, the data shows that California reached a nominal gross domestic product of $4.1 trillion in 2024, while Japan hit $4.02 trillion.

The United States as a whole leads the global rankings, followed by China and Germany.

“California isn’t just keeping pace with the world — we’re setting the pace,” Newsom said in a statement. “Our economy is thriving because we invest in people, prioritize sustainability, and believe in the power of innovation.”

Despite the state’s global success, Newsom warned that the state’s economic outlook could be tarnished by federal policies and tariffs.

“While we celebrate this success, we recognize that our progress is threatened by the reckless tariff policies of the current federal administration. California’s economy powers the nation, and it must be protected,” Newsom said.

Newsom’s office also noted that the state’s economy has been rapidly growing. In the last four years, California’s nominal GDP grew by 7.5%
