  1. Hmmm.

So if someone was to, say, polder this vast (but assuming, relatively shallow) new sea, that country would have rights over it, right?

    Right?

    Asking for a friend.

(Shouts into the other room) Hans! I think I’ve found some Lebensraum!

  13. Where is literally anyone of value from Ireland going to move now?

  14. Just the geographic implications of that scenario: Netherlands would instantly flood. It would not get those relatively mild North Sea storms but direct Atlantic storms. The Westerschelde and the border near former Antwerp are not protected so it is pretty easy for stormwater to crush into the country via that route.

The (Alpine) Rhine would have a gigantic 250 m waterfall directly at the city of Basel which becomes endangered because it is situated on a very high cliff above an very active ocean. To a lesser extend endangered are the cities of Geneva and Lausanne – near the Rhone waterfall or Léman waterwand (former Lake Geneva). The Rhine north of Karlsruhe would still exist (especially after the confluences with the Neckar and the Main) but it would be much weaker and in consequence turning much of the Netherlands into a saltwater marsh – because it has no power to push enough sweetwater into the country and keep the saltwater from the Atlantic out – which would be incredibly bad for agriculture.

The 4600 m high Dufourspitze would shortly become the highest mountain in Euope. Because of its 4600 m high cliff directly into the Italian Sea it would almost instantly collapse. The Dom would become the highest mountain pretty guranteed as its peak is not directly located on the sea.

Famous are some sinkholes like those in Baarle-Nassau, where they often are just the size of one garden and have even patches of land inside them. Another sinkholes is Campo d’ Italia on former Lago di Lugano which just straight up disappeared after it was sucked dry by a short-living waterfall.

  15. The fact that they left in Scotland makes me think OP is a Yank in disguise.
