The London Marathon is in 3 days time and I was surprised at the ratio of applicants versus accepted. This BBC news article said how for the 2025 marathon, there were 840,000 applications!
So I made this chart to see how it has evolved over time.
If you are interested, I made a Youtube video talking about the chart I produced here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDPLLZmfsqY

Interesting trend! Thx for sharing
I think this is probably similar for a lot of marathons. I know the Chicago marathon has a high number of applications and has to limit entrants.
Interesting graph though!
Why was there no marathin in 2022 and 23?
I noticed that there is no nominal fee for applying. This means many (even bots) can apply and hope for one application gets selected
To me it seems like things like strava and instagram made it a lot more popular to take part in this. Now you can take part and show the world what an amazing athlete you are.
E: not that it’s a bad thing that they have to an extent gotten more people on the health and fitness bandwagon
My dad’s in that tiny first bar. 3.29 IIRC.
