This is hardly news, the French politicians have already been shown to be lying by the letter that was published. It’s simple gaslighting at this stage.
And the melodrama continues….
TL;DR: We don’t learn anything new with this leak. It’s still he says she says.
>*”According to a source familiar with the messages, when Morrison tried to set up a call with Macron about the submarine contract on Sept. 14, two days before the deal with the U.S. and Britain was announced, Macron responded with a message saying “Should I expect good or bad news for our joint submarines ambitions?”*
>***”The message with Morrison’s response was not leaked.”***
>*”The source declined to be identified because of the sensitivity of the matter.”*
The text in bold is pretty important. Whether or not Morrison said ‘good’ or ‘bad’ in reply to Macron’s question is key to whether or not he was being duplicitous. The fact that Morrison’s answer has not been made public does not do him any favours here.
Leaking private conversations with other leaders to the press is a big diplomatic faux pas, not sure what Morrison is trying to achieve here. Especially since it only says he tried to schedule a phone call, but not specified the issue. So Macron’s point that he was not informed beforehand still stands.
Infuriating behaviour from the australian gov.
Regardless of the content of the conversation, leaking this is abhorrent and goes against respectable diplomatic norms.
If your countries leaders cannot talk frankly to each other behind closed doors, then it ruins all global diplomacy and trust. You might as well start seizing diplomatic papers in your country and reading them, get rid of diplomatic immunity for ambassadors and start assassinating the heads of state of countries you don’t like.
These are all diplomatic norms that the world has unwritten gentlemen’s agreements on.
Macron: Can’t believe you done this after all I fucking did for you
Australia: New number who dis?
Mmmh yes, leaking private diplomatic discussions. Another brillant move from Scumo and co, and they say Anglos are all about proper manners and do process, I guess they lost some of it on their way down under lol.
Also not even showing his response ? Come on that’s basically admitting he is lying. If he really told Macron the deal was getting cancelled why not show his reply ? It would dispell all accusations of lies, really duplicious it seems.
