norway was run more like a colony under the rule of denmark and sweden, there was almost war in 1905. And acording to §1 in our constitution, the politicians that got norway into EU trough the EES treaty and gave away our hydroelectricity to the EU which is behind much of the decline in living standard across norway in the last few years comitted treason.
Norwegians learned to govern Norway under the Swedish crown. We were given the time and space to build institutions that we weren’t afforded under Danish rule. I think Swedish rule was a blessing in disguise.
Bad, same as with the Danish union.
Denmark and Sweden should pay reparations to Norway.
We will take Greenland from Denmark (its ours always was) and Jämtland + Härjedalen from Sweden, again ours.
Then Danish kings/Queens must abdicate, we make Durek the shaman king of Denmark and Sweden.
Uff… Norwegians refuse to join the EU just to not be part of an union with Sweden. Enough said. /jk
This is known as the herring salad
We actually don’t really care that much about it. The independence from Denmark is much more “important”
Being under the Swedish rule actually shaped and changed our democratic system to become more democratic. The revisions to the 1814 constitution limited the kings power and the parliamentarism we got later on was very important for this as well. “All makt i denne sal”.
That being said, who knows how our future would have been, if we were fully independent from 1814. Could have been good, could have been bad.
They stole land that we want back.
There was a personal union under the same king. But Norway had its own constitution and parliament. Bernadotte who took over after a few years was a modern liberal for his time. Not too shabby all things considering.
The swedish era probably didnt matter too much after all. Foreign policy as far as sweden refusing to build consilates abroad to maintain norwegian shipping interests (2nd largest merchant fleet in the world) led to the breakup.
The Norwegian elite hated the swedish era and politicsl struggle against the kings power was real during the 1880s.
99% of norwegians does not think of the swedish era at all probably.
The danish era (when Norway was a province for 150 years or so) is viewed far more negative. King was absolute too at the time.
In many ways it was a golden age for Norway. We rebuilt our identity as a nation. Art and economy flourished.
The Swedish crown served us much better than the Danish one, it gave us the liberty to build up industries the danes wouldn’t.
It also gave us a politically strong government since for the last 40 years or so of the union a large part of Oslos time was spent telling Stockholm to get lost at almost every turn.
If it hadnt been for the Union with sweden our merchant navy would never have been what it was after ww1 when it was among the worlds strongest
