A former Alderman in the East Flemish town of Oudenaarde has been given a 6-month suspended prison sentence, fined 4,000 euro and given a 1-year suspended driving ban after he was involved in an accident that resulted in the death of a cyclist. Mathieu Mas was an Alderman for Iedereen9700! a local list made up of Christian democrats, socialists and independents.

So killing someone while being drunk and cannabis influence results in no prison and ability to drive just year later? What the heck is this ruling?

  1. The victim was under influence of cannabis and didnt yield when he was supposed to. Seems both shouldnt have been driving/riding.

  2. Difficult case because the cyclist was also under influence, didn’t stop where he should have stopped and didn’t got any lights on his bike.

Is the sentece too light. Maybe, but I’m not sure the accident could have been avoided if the driver had been sober.

It’s the cyclist who was on cannabis, not the driver. Are you sure you read the article, OP?

By the way, how is this article so full of mistakes?

  4. Forcing the man to take our public transport for a whole year is punishment enough

  5. because somehow being druk or high isn’t having the intent to kill.

it really is the best way to kill a person in belgium.
