Pic #8 is wild! I didn’t know you could get something like this on old cameras!
Man I really need to read up on this war more. The Chinese were impressive in pushing back the Americans. I’m fascinated.
My first unit after graduating Basic/AIT (1996) was the 1/32 Infantry (10th Mountain Division), the battle cry was “Chosin”. About a year in, we had a regimental reunion where us young bucks had the privilege of meeting the Korean War veterans who served with the regiment in the battle of Chosin Reservoir. Some of those guys might be even in the above pictures. The stories those gents told us that night, over a steak dinner and drinks, were simultaneously fascinating and horrific. Probably not many, if any, of those legends are around anymore.
* Had one gent peel his shirt off his shoulder to show me the scar he got from a Chinese bayonet charge, and matter of factly says, “I bashed that bastard’s head in with my Garand”.
* A mortarman told me they were firing too many rounds off their mortars that they were glowing red hot at the base. But they had run out of water to cool the guns down so they literally took turns pissing on the tubes so they could keep cranking off the fire missions.
A great uncle on my father’s side went MIA here during the retreat.
