  1. Yeah, poking a major economic and military power was probably not the smartest long-term move. Consequences are piling up.

  2. China does need to be reined on. Just not the way these idiots are doing it. It has to be strategic and precise. They need to be forced to act more like a developed country. Trying to cripple them will only force them to retaliate.

  3. At some point the bear had to be poked. BUT, China has been out of control for approximately 20 years. No one said a word, and all these politicians and CEO’s padded their pockets and did not do right by their own middle class. It is truly terrible how they have short changed two generations of Americans and middle class around the world.

  4. You don’t need to study economics. Just watch those Shaolin Monks kick inch other in the nuts and you know it’s not a good idea to mess with them.

  5. The right idea is to plan and strategize first, rather than charge ahead without any solid plan in place.

  6. It’s funny that Trump and its supporters keep saying that China ripped us off when the real culprits are the oligarchs of America. We continue to put the blame the world of our trade deficits to only continue to see the gap between us and the rich widen. $80 billion net worth was unheard of until we now see net worth of &400 billion. Yet, middle class folks are barely making it on a 3-5% annual raise, if any.

  7. These sorts of moronic, undiplomatic comments are going to piss China off even more. With these guys in charge the US is doomed.

  8. “Let China sleep, for when she wakes, she will shake the world”

  9. Saying this shit won’t make them change dumbass

Also there’s many Americans including conservatives who don’t want the pollution and other toxic shit associated with bringing back these goods to America in their back yard

  10. It’s scary that a man so profoundly ignorant of economic theory passed Senate confirmation to become the US Treasury Secretary.

Madagascar sells vanilla because that’s what they have. The US sells software and services because that’s what we have. Colombia raises coffee for the same reason. China makes all the world’s stuff because that’s what they’re good at.

It’s a big world and we each contribute to the whole our best. Should Madagascar write their own software and underwrite bonds? Should they eat all their own vanilla output? Make their own gasoline out of petroleum they don’t have? Should the US grow our own crops that don’t grow in the US for climate reasons? If we all shut down trade and lived on what is produced within our borders what would that do for our local and global economies? Then who would buy the stuff the US exports? This is just stupid beyond words.

  11. Here’s the thing. He’s right about the problem. The WTO has been saying this for years. However, the solutions proposed are poorly thought out and blindly ideological. The thing is that the US did have the upper hand and all the ability to address the problem. But that has certainly changed now.

  12. Why aren’t we pointing the finger(s) at the businesses that moved to China for cheaper rates/costs? Who’s is really to blame here? Oligarchs, right?

  13. So it’s chinas fault they are manufacturing? And not pushing for mindless consumerism? How evil.

  14. No, messing with China is a great idea since they’ve been messing with us for the past two decades and we’ve allowed Wall Street to guide our country, rather than patriotism (no, I am not a Trumper whatsoever). Messing with all of the other countries was the really bad/stupid idea.

  15. It seems like Bessie is chastising China for being too successful at manufacturing. How would it look if CHINA chastised us for killing our own manufacturing base since the 90s?

  16. Leave it to arrogant American idiots to tell China what THEY need to do.

America needs to get its own house in order.
