As Trump’s actions and rhetoric rock the global economy, Jon is joined by Rory Stewart, former British Cabinet Minister and current co-host of “The Rest is Politics.” Together, they examine the rapidly shifting relationships between the U.S. and its traditional allies, discuss the opportunities these shifts create for China, explore which policies and failures have contributed to the rise of populist leaders worldwide, and consider what these developments mean for the future of the West.

You sure he didn't make a deal with the big boxes at the expense of small businesses? Cause that's what it looks like to me. He met with all them and they seemed to come away happy. Meanwhile getting rid of de minimus is going to hurt a lot of small businesses.
I wouldn't be surprised if the big boxes get a deal, but the small businesses get to hold the bag.
Great pod cast, Rory is a British gem, as is Jon, a USA gem! PS, Pigfuck?
People who are ripping people off all the time always think everyone is ripping them off all the time.
I mean the world is one big con culture right now but America has really allowed it far more than most of the western world.
Well Rory most politicians have not travelled Afghanistan so there world is more parochial and there political seat is there world. The world would be better if we had to beg people to enter politics. How do you do that take away the money. Let public service be a real service like nursing. Imagine if allowed nurses to deal drugs on the side you'll quickly see a new type of nurse where patient care is an after thought.
Well done Jon. You do what so many crappy podcast hosts do and constantly interrupt your thoughtful, intelligent guest mid-steam. What an ego.
Dear John could you look in to the data of the Election truth Alliance? seems really compelling and important yet this isn't a big story yet
Most TP is Made in U.S.A. No more panic attacks. 😅
Trump's constant shifting on tariffs is just a conman telling his mark whatever he thinks they want to hear. Just like he's always done. Except he's too stupid to remember what he said previously, and if anyone does call him out on it he just gaslights them and moves on, AND NO-ONE PUSHES BACK!.
Great talk between two smart and well informed guys. The problem is that the very people who voted for Trump in swathes will never have the patience, intelligence or capacity to watch and analyse this with the real perspective it requires.
Insightful discussion, the West is disintegrating, there’s no returning to the old days.
Its such a shame that these nuanced, intelligent conversations don't appeal to the population.
There is a critical mass of the human race that hasn't developed to the point required for the species to thrive or even survive.
Brilliant conversation
Learned so much via watching this.
One of Rory's problems is that he is so intertwined in that period of history where American soft power influenced the birth of dozens of liberal democracies that he cannot envision a world without it. The one thing you can rely on with power is that it shifts at the macro and the micro. This is one of those macro shifts. Maybe even as big as civilisational shifts.
Its about lifting people up across the world, not being richy rich.
Jon, your next guest… please host Peter Zeihan. Let’s get the word out.
It's nice of both Stewarts to confirm that two party systems based on winner-take-all are terribad… 😛
I enjoyed my Fourth of July last year having Rory Stewart breakdown the pre and during election in the UK but holy cow he got it so wrong with the American election in 2024, although his stance on Palestine was better than most he clearly did not see the weakness in Kamala’s position on that and how that was gonna affect the election.
WONDERFUl! I was so lucky to live under the Brits in Hong Kong for two years. (1994-96, the cusp of the Handover) and from thence, spent a most delightful dozen years in central London, raising our 8-year-old daughter, who stayed in the UK and Europe through completing a degree from St Andrews. Guys like Rory Stewart cannot be said to be thick upon the ground in their natural habitat, but there is a clear imbalance between the usual UK 130 IQ gents and the 110 IQ yahoos from Harvard and Yale, like that yutz Vance. To be so stupid as to not recognize the superiority of the Brits is rare, though pretty fucking common among us yanks, especially such schmegeeges as Vance, who was badly misled to believe in his own arrogant cleverness, which is basically just plain bad manners and a tragic lack of worldliness. I assume he was badly bullied at his IV league schools, because he had all the hallmarks (as does Trump) of being an egomaniac with an inferiority complex, or the piece of shit at the center of the universe, King Baby, etc, characteristics of the deranged idiot who must be the corpse at every funeral, the bride at every wedding, the victim at every crime scene. Trump, Vance, and those vacuous vampires he calls a cabinet have GOT TO GO! To listen to such good company as the Stewart Bros, in this time of horror, I don't know whether to weep or leak, shit or go blind, or take my precious British passport and go live among normals. I suppose I will stay here in the current madness, and try to retrieve the women's rights stolen by the Roberts Court, sort out the Chevron mistake, and undo the catastrophic decrees of the unhinged Thomas, Alito, Cavanaugh, Gorsuch, and a contingency of state lawmakers whose removal can allow us to look a lot less pathetic on the world stage. Meanwhile, we will just bumpkin fuck along, dropping IQ points regularly as the Dept of education is disemboweled and science struggled to retake its throne in this mess. Thanks for a great conversation. JS, I'd reckon you have an IQ of 170. You gotta be very smart to be funny, it's not a mug's game.
Just roll back your ego Jon, STFU and let your guest speak without those distracting (for speaker AND listener) interruptions… Note how Rory Stewart listens and doesn't interrupt your train of thought whilst you are speaking… Could be this ego thing is at the root of America's problems – too much wanting to talk, not enough listening?
❤ both of these men, sanity amongst the madness!
I have always said Rory Stewart is the only conservative I would ever have voted for. He would have made an excellent PM, instead we got Cameron and Boris!!! 😢
John that is the perfect room for podcasting. I love it. That printer annoys me so much.
Id ask you to move it but i dont want to end up on an RFK registry
The ‘rest of the world’ ie: the non western countries have seen the U.S. as a malign force in the world for the last 60-70 years. Now all of a sudden we (Europe) are on the receiving end and it’s such a shock….
Sadly, as opposed to 100 days it feels like YEARS
I used to make fun of the Brits for Brexit. This is our brexit. We are cooked john please save us
Save journalism, save the world. 🖖
Rory Stewart is briliant. Would have been the best rational choice for Prime Minister instead of Boris Johnson. His 'The Rest Is Politics' channel with Alastair Campbell is soooo informative.
Admire both Stewarts tremendously and have read three of Rory's books including his latest: "Politics on the Edge" (British title version).
Depressing that not a single moment in their intelligent discussion addresses the foundational problem of our shared democracies … not one sentence uttered by these brilliant individuals truly enlightens our plight. When this happens on any topic, in my experience, the fault arises from being too close to the problem, which hides the broad view.
After much study, in my opinion, we lost our democracy, as the surviving Founders wrote at the time, in the early 1800's coincident with the rise of political parties in America. Our prejudice is to think the most important political problems have their origins during the time of our own experience. They do not, but we can't, won't admit it.
May I recommend the book: "First Principles" by Thomas Ricks, in which the author explores the enormous influence Greek and Roman though, and historical figures, had on the Founding Fathers. The Founders believed the new American Democracy would only work if elected representatives were personally virtuous. In the context of their time, this was seen as Noblesse-Oblige: wealthy citizens would be expected to serve the public, for the common good. In order to maintain their social status in the community it was mandated they serve the community in the local legislature.
Having to serve for the common good, rather than serving for your family's personal advantage was the only true safeguard. All the other Constitutional "checks and balances" were structural guardrails, window dressing to keep institutional power in check. If electeds were not virtuous individually – Democracy would fail from a rotting core. Ten years after the ratification of the US Constitution, saw the rise of political parties. To many of the surviving Founders, this signaled the beginning of the end for American Democracy, because politicians elected by a party, served the party, wanted to maintain power for themselves and would not serve all the citizens. In America we lost our Democracy just a few decades following it's birth. Lacking a core of service to the entire community is a political cancer that has hollowed out all democratic institutions. There is no longer any "there – there". With enormous effort and resolve we could fix this, by eliminating careerism from politics. Any other endeavor save this task, is folly.
Folks, he's not fully leaving… musk step aside bs
A marvellous intelligent chat, loved it.👍🇬🇧
Thank you for bringing such an engaging group of great communicators on the podcast each week. These conversations are inspiring, educational, and encourage independent research and analysis. I really felt Rory's pained bewilderment in contemplating what is happening in the USA and the geopolitical consequences. Following on from afar here in Australia, this is how many of us feel. There is such extraordinary potential for genuine and sustained social and economic equality. Greed for power, wealth, and control is destroying so much right now. Out of the crucible of this horrible reckoning that is Trump 2.0, we can hope to see rebuilding of a more egalitarian domestic economic policy and international relationships founded on mutual respect.
If you want to look deep into trumps psychology and from where his need for validation and sickening need for admiration, you have to go back to relationship with his father. It didn't start in his time as real estate mogul. He probably never was validated as child for being just who he was. He is like a vampire or a sponge, always drying out and therefore on an eternalhunt for admiration and validation, but when he is alone, he always feel the empty void inside and the strange thing with him, he's got no authenticity to fill that void. That is why he can't stay on track when he speaks. There's no red line, no plan, nothing…. It all just somehow pops up in his mind as he speaks from his childhood wound, projecting into the global arena his inner pain derived from a father who never loved him. His father took away anything authentic from little Donald and created him in his own image. This is what Trump is now, his fathers image, empty, a nothing, not able to feel empathy, no guilt, no remorse. That is how dictators are born. They are empty trying to fill the void inside themselves while projecting their sense of loss and failure into the world. Everybody needs a scapegoat, that's what makes it so easy for dictators to find an audience.
Great talk!
I've only listened to the half of this podcast so far, so apologies if I'm pre-empting, but nothing so far has touched upon the manipulation of information, and thus opinion, in the West. Rupert Murdoch, through his newspapers and even more through Fox News, is in some ways the real villain of this whole shitshow. In that regard, Trump and MAGA are merely the creatures of Murdoch.
What an excellent show. Kudos gents on actual, intelligent conversation.
People will study this for years at the pretentiousness. Sorry Jon. Get better
restructingt he global order is absolute rubbish,
Trump is trying but at least the chinese are telling him to F off.
China can do much more damage to the US that the US can do china, trumps an imbecile( i apologise to actual imbeciles) .
The USA is dead , good thing.
Rory is very well spoken, intelligent and appears to care about people however don't let that fool you.
Rory is a heart a full blooded Tory and has supported many bills which by design were aimed at hurting the most vulnerable people in society.
He was an ardent supporter of austerity which nearly a decade later we are still suffering from its after effects.
The only reason he is no longer an MP is because he stood against Boris Johnson and was roundly beaten and humiliated.
I'm thinking tag team debate – WPC (World Podcast Championship), where the Stewart Brothers take on and demolish Vance/Rogan, Trump/Musk, Bannon/Miller et al. Admittedly, Rory may need some 300 style CGI augmentation before it goes to cable!
Watching Stewart + Stewart it's a new fresh air
As a Europian I have to say we stop watching US media there full of shit deeping more and more to fake news destroying everything free word should know and remember how democracy works
First thing first : he's lien to US citizens every 2 minutes

EU should fine a way to see future otherwise becouse there is no way back to normal with the clown half of the country vote an idiot old fool inside white house to rule them
